I don't think you can just get a USB to ethernet adapter to get your printer online. You'll need some kind of "USB print server".

  • Such a device does exist. It is called an ethernet to USB printer server. It is a long time since I've seen anyone use one which comes from a time way back when ethernet was only 10/100 Mb/s.

These days printers have wifi. It works a lot better than a printer server.

What sort of printer have you got?

    • Brother mfc1810

  • I am at a total loss as to why my postings above were unpublished. I googled for a printer server, and published a link to it it, with a comment that printer servers are not generally used these days, wifi is.

You could find an old AirPort Express, apple wifi device. Can plug speaker into it to so you can jam to some tunes while printing. Apple don't sell networking stuff anymore so it'd have to be used.

usb itself won't work, what make you think a non-smart adapter would make it work? oh it doesn't support usb, so let's add another layer of magic ethernet and somehow it would magicaly translate the usb signal and slap on a ip address.

Sorry for being sarcastic, it bring my memory back back when I work for a computer store and deal with this very question every week —— where some insist it will most definitely work, and agreed to not bring it back if it's not compatible as they've got told already, yet still bring it back and acting like a cry baby.

    • what if OP plugs a Telstra 4GX USB Modem into the USB port on the printer…?

      • how about OP plugs a computer into the usb port on the printer :)

  • USB to Ethernet adapters need a software driver. It is built into Windoze 10/11 but printers don't provide it. Buy a printer with Ethernet or use the WiFi like someone suggested.

  • Plug your printer to an unused laptop/desktop, and then just share it on windows…

Low cost and high success rate
