What to Add to My Desk to Protect My Shins?

The vertical board of my computer desk (the bit that attaches to the back of the drawers) has sharp edges, and it regularly takes skin off my shins when I stretch out.

I'd like to add a padded bumper of some sort to the sharp edge, so I can stop having sores on my shins. I have also considered rounding the edge, but have no skills in that area. Perhaps a wood router would work? The board appears to be laminex-coated chipboard.

Ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Pool noodle

    • An interesting thought. I had considered a similar thing, cutting some 50mm PVC pipe and screwing it into place, but I suspect there are self-adhesive rubber strips designed for this sort of thing. But I have no idea where to find them, or what search terms to use.

Get the noodle ! Choose whatever colour you want. PVC pipe would look ugly as ..

        • Nobody can see it, and I was going to spray-paint it black to match the board. Perhaps black irrigation pipe could save me some trouble.

Pool noodles are also EXCELLENT for moving house.

Buy a box from Bunnnings/Kmart etc then slice & stick on every possible corner, bookshelf, between furniture in the truck/container, edges of your TV.

I even cut some up in short lengths as makeshift padding inside boxes since I had so many spares

  • Duct tape, Hot Glue gun

      on shins or desk?

    • I've added "padded" to the post. Is that what you intended the hot glue for?

    Shin guards

The straps aren't long enough to go around the desk!

    Google "Desk Edge Protector"

Do not google "Edging at the Desk with Protection"

    • That's the sort of thing I was looking for, padded self-adhesive edge protector. But a lot of people like the pool noodle option above, and it's cheap and easily available, so I'll try that first.

      Thanks!

Buy some U channel from aliexpress.

    • I can't see any padded U channel?

check the baby section in big w or kmart
you can get bumpers, plastic corners etc

    • I have some silicon rubber corner protectors that are quite thick and have air cushioning inside, and I was hoping to find something similar to cover an edge instead of a corner. Sadly I've been looking for quite a while in stores and hardware stores, and haven't found anything that cushions as well.

I'm sold on the pool noodle suggestion though, I'll give that a go.

      Thanks!

Clearly you’re going to need to amputate.

      Save on shoes and socks
      .

    • you’re going to need to amputate

But the desk will fall over with only three legs!

  • Try using silicone as adhesive. Wont melt plastic or pool noodle hopefullt and one it sets wont move. Or a neutral adhesive joinerers use cant recall the type right now sorry

    • I'm a bit concerned with how permanent silicone is, and not knowing how long the pool noodle will last (from possible accidental damage given it's near my feet).

If friction isn't enough to hold it in position, I'll drill six or so 3mm holes in the board, and use cable ties to hold the pool noodle up.

      Thanks!

You can try looking at corner protectors for baby proofing. If you google with those terms you're more likely to find what you're looking for.

  • Just a follow-up: I've had the pool noodle in place now for ten months, and it works really well. I used a knife to make a single slit in the pool noodle, pulled the noodle open, and placed it over the sharp edge of the desk.

It has stayed in place without needing any repositioning, held by friction alone.

If anyone else wants to try this, cut the noodle to maybe 1-2cm longer than the edge you want to cover. It seems the length has shortened a little, so there is now a small gap between one of the side panels and the noodle. I didn't notice this gap when I first put the noodle in place, so possibly it has shrunk a little with time.
