Smart tv's, media streaming, network.

Hi guys,

I'm on the market for a new smart tv. Probably a new Samsung plasma. Around the 59" size, or a 55" led LCD.

I'm a bit out of the loop as I have not really kept up with technology in the last few years.

My question. Can I buy a network drive, wireless or not doesn't matter, will a wifi smart tv pickup the media off the NAS over the network? My gf and I both use laptops and want all our media in one spot too. Would i still need a media player like the WD media box? I'll have a wireless router installed too.

  • cheaper solution for smart tv, grab this one http://kck.st/M9npe1 if you can wait until october. it's preorder.

  • I'm not entirely sure, as I don't make use of the feature on my Samsung Smart TV, but I think you can just either buy a wireless adapter, or use ethernet straight to the router. If the TV has DLNA, which a Samsung Smart TV should, you would also be able to use AllShare to stream your PC or smartphone screen to the TV.
I'm not sure about other brands, but I'd imagine that its pretty much the same. If you want, you could just plug in your HDD to the TV, since any respectable TV nowadays has USB ports.

  • Thanks guys,

I want to avoid unplugging/plugging up a hard drive all the time, and prefer to use network, I think the latest Samsung tv's have wireless built in?? but more input into who uses the feature and if it's good?

    Sonic2011 - good idea, but I want a new tv :)

    • mate buy a WD live- it will pick from your nas, no issues
if you want new tv because of smart tv, do your self a favour and buy smart tv upgrader
      like LG

this was $59 at bigpond shopping, does the really good job and can watch all free live channels including Bigpond's 5 live channels

  • I have a similar setup, except with a streaming pc attached to the tv, that streams content from a server in another room. I tried to use the tv to access it directly and it didn't pick it up. it just wants you to plug the HDD straight in, which sucks. it should however puck up other PCs. so maybe you could map the NAS on your laptop then stream from it, but that kinda sucks.
