Mounting Frameless Mirror on Wall

Hi guys, any suggestions on how best to put up a frameless 10kg mirror on a painted plasterboard wall?

I’ve read of 3 methods:
1. mounting clips (but the clips show so not a clean look)
2. some adhesive (but this involves sanding the wall to remove the paint etc.)
3. double sided tape

I’m leaning towards the double sided mirror mounting tape.

Any thoughts?

  • 10kg, are you sure?

  • Add one Silicone Sealer as well. It how glass splash backs are installed. Just glued to the wall with Silicone.

    • Apparently applying the silicone in circles creates better hold too.

I would be still paranoid as hell and still use some mounting tape as an extra precaution.

  • Did mine with Silicone too 10 years ago

PS did mine on tiles…. it will only be as strong as the weakest link. IE PAINT

Screw a thin backing board slightly smaller than the mirror to the studs in the wall, then apply non acetic silicone to the backing board in long non overlapping strokes, make sure the mirror you buy has a pvc backing on it. Stick the mirror on with double sided tape. The double sided tape will hold it till the silicone dries.

    • That's so genius, I dont have enough words to describe how impressed I am. What a fantastic idea.

  • Double checked and the mirror weight is 6kg – it’s a cheapie from IKEA: https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/laerbro-mirror-60471021

Those clips just don’t look great.

I’m not very handy so looking for the easiest option. Adhesive/silicone sounds like there are a few things involved.

Thinking to go for something like this: https://www.bunnings.com.au/permastik-5m-x-24mm-mirror-mount… or the stronger version: https://www.bunnings.com.au/permastik-5m-x-32mm-mirror-mount…

This is going in a bedroom not in a high moisture area like bathroom. Also I only have like 3.5cm space to play with - the mirror will be mounted on a wall on which a door backs on to i.e. when you open the door, the door goes towards the mirror but the door stopper will stop it from hitting the mirror.

    • Reviews of that tape don't reflect well on the product…

In my experience, 3M double sided tape is the best there is, possibly overkill for your application, but use it perhaps in each corner and in the middle and that mirror won't move.

Are you renting? Something to consider is how you will remove the mirror when you move out. Using double sided tape on a painted wall will most likely result in paint being taken off the wall on removal.

Command Strips are surprisingly strong. 2 packs of these (just the strips, not the hooks) would likely be more than enough, and easy to remove/

  • The instructions for the tape says "clean surface, for best results use Permastik Isopropyl Surface Cleaner" - won't Isopropyl strip paint? Am I better off using something like sugar soap before applying tape?

    • Isopropyl won't remove paint; you're thinking of Acetone. Isopropyl will remove oils and residues from hands and dust from the surface. Sugar Soap will work too, but the former will work just fine.

  • You can use Gorilla Tape 60lbs from Amazon which is pretty hardy and holds up to 27kg. (OzB not letting me include Amazon link for some reason but you can find it)
