does anyone know where to get a good deal on FOSCAM camera's

I was looking for something like this
http://www.foscamaustralia.com.au/index.php?route=product/pr…

  • I need it to be wireless and to transmit over web.

Does anyone know any secrets for finding these cheaper - I would be willing to consider another brand if it was reliable / well rated….

thanks

  • Not sure where you can get them in Oz, but Amazon.co.uk sells chinese knockoff versions of this for £40 (A$60), so my guess would be ebay. These are all just white label branding of basically the same guts, and it works fine (though requires a working brain to set it up).

    • thanks for the comment..
have you had experience with these or are you speculating
i need a working one in the next 2 weeks - so dont want to muck around with rubbish

      • Got one working here at the moment. Been working for a month now.

These cheapest ones don't tend to have the moving IR filter, so grass colours can be off, but it's no big issue. Can view on my smartphone fine. If you particularly want HQ video over the web, get a more expensive one with x264 compression rather than MJPEG.

The only issue in the reviews tend to be from muppets who can't setup web enabled devices on their home networks - hence the statement about needing a brain.

        Would buy again.

        • whihc "brand" did you buy?

had a look at ebay and came up with this one

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/H-264-WiFi-IP-Wireless-Camera-Aud…

the same from foscam is 180

I wonder how they would compare head to head…

        • That standard of camera was about £60 (A$90) on amazon.co.uk - so it's an appropriate price.

The 'brand' on mine was Tenvis, but only because their website looked like it had been around for a while. Honestly, it's not going to make much difference.

Head to head they would probably look and work identically. I don't have a foscam one, but from the specs they might well have the same circuit board inside.

One thing I forgot before. If you are looking to have your camera look through glass, be aware that the IR illuminators at night just glare off the glass into the camera and you see nothing.

        • what software are you running it on?
mine just arrived and the supplied is ordinary
          any suggestions?

        • Well, the actual device has inbuilt web controls, etc.

For the phone I use Net Eye (on Android). I guess there are other PC apps, but I've not bothered.

  • I would be careful buying them off ebay. There are lots of fakes out there. There were more fakes on there than there are genuine ones when I was looking for mine about 24 months ago.

I bought mine through www.mangocam.com. They are an authorised reseller. They also have free shipping unless you want express. If you do get one, go for the black. The whites models can reflect light from the base into the lens, particular at night, and creates a bit of a flare.
