9.1.4 from one soundbar, two satellites and a sub. I dunno. I'm not sold on these things

    • Yeah real speakers are still better but you need the room/aesthetic.

      • And the budget.

    • +1

Yeah totally. I think they're a great way to get good sound from your TV on a budget, but I have a hard time accepting that this bar plus 2 satellites infront of me will create 4 individual isolated channels behind me (surround and surround back), plus another 4 above me (atmos).

But again, it's cool if you just accept it's a 3.1 with some ambient reflection.

Edit: That said Digital Trends were recently raving about the new Nakamichi Dragon Soundbar so there might be something to it.

      • Except it isn't 3.1, it's actually 9.1.4 with 13 separate drivers plus a sub. Just that some bounce a channel off the ceiling (rears have 2 channels each) rather than being placed in the ceiling. Not perfect but it is providing all those Atmos channels for $800

That's great man, but as the speakers are actually infront of you I have a hard time believing you'll hear them behind you. Hence why I suggested considering it a 3.1 setup.

Just for comparison, I have 4 Atmos speakers in my setup, on the roof, pointed down towards the listener position. Do you think that this soundbar, with 4 smaller speakers mounted on-top of the bar aimed towards the ceiling would have the same effect as that?

          • @AlanHB: Hey, just got my folks the model up from this, and I have the 800b and just wanted to chime in. Sounds great to my ears for the price it is. Don't think there are too many that would say your setup isn't going to work better. Plenty of reviews around to say that with the right room the ceiling bounce is at least serviceable. But yeah, dedicated ceiling speakers are absolutely going to work better.

@alayne: Makes sense to me dude.

Just to be clear I'm not trying to say that soundbars are crap, I'm just skeptical that they can have a surround effect that is comparable to a surround setup.

          • -1

@AlanHB: As wahhaj says below, 2 speakers are physically placed behind you like normal rears

      • I think the satellites are supposed to go behind as they are surround speakers and wireless as well.

Home theatre or Sound Bar ?

    • +4

Proper theater speakers if you have the space to accommodate, these things will pale in comparison. I have 7.2.4 at home and there is no way this thing would come close.

Depends if you're willing to spend heaps more plus extra on installation

  • I've never done a price match before, but does anyone know if JBHIFI would do a price match with this? Missus said its a done deal if we can price match and pick up from JBHIFI on the weekend.

    • They won't price match coupon codes, nor eBay.

      • I know its very anti ozbargain of me but I would forego the coupon in order to pick it up today on the way home from work. Ill open a chat with them and see how I go, miss every shot you dont take, right?

        • +1

Yup, that's been my thought recently too. Costs nothing to ask.

In that case, if not matching eBay voucher, try their actual store: https://www.powerland.com.au/samsung-9-1-4-channel-q-series-…

          • @kwchaz: Oh thats perfect! Thank you so much, I think you have just made this a sure thing. Legend, happy friday!

            • @doobey1231: I tried price matching last week. They don't match with ebay. But they had a quick look and i got it cheaper than i could find anywhere outside of ebay (was ~5% more than ebay price). Still worth it with JB gift cards i had lying around.

          • @kwchaz: JBHIFI were happy to match the $849 from powerland! Picking it up after work :D Thank you again for the link, my ears appreciate you!

Maybe no comparison with true surround/receiver but a massive upgrade on my LG c2 sound, which was decent for a tv. Also for the price and size its a no brainer if you want an affordable device that sounds ok. I got mine just under 800 a week or so ago through this seller and no regrets!

One day hopefully I can spend more than this and have the room to enjoy it, until then its good value.
