Upgraded Wi-Fi Antenna for The Fronius Primo Solar Pv Inverter?

My Fronius inverter is having a hard time to maintain a reliable connection - I have moved the router to be as near as possible to the inverter - but i guess the brick walls are still making things challenging.

I did some research and apparently the Fronius inverter's built-in WLAN antenna could be relocated outside the unit to get a better signal and apparently there is also a USB type wifi antenna that can be used.

Wanted to know if anyone has replaced/upgraded the antenna system of the fronius and could chip in with some feedback/recommendations?

TIA

  • What type of router do you have and what kinda of distance are we talking from Inverter to Router?

    • I have an ubiquiti EdgerouterX + AC Lite ubiquiti access point. Added an Asus AC68u router (set as an access point) nearer to the inverter to help with better coverage. Distance from the Asus AC68u is about 5m thereabout.

  • I've done it before, it just takes a standard sma connector.

A better antenna in a better position has a good chance of helping you out.

    • Cool! Which antenna did you use and if you use an extension cable to reposition the antenna away? How far did you move it to? Does it help significantly?

      • It was from Jaycar, the inverter was in a shed. So we mounted the antenna on the external wall and ran the lead back inside into the inverter.

  • I have a fronius inverter and Asus ac2900 router - works fine with some brick walls in between if that helps.

    • Thanks bro. I was thinking to get the Ubiquiti AC LR access point - favouring its "Long Range" capability - but wasnt sure if that will solve the issue as I read somewhere that often it is the Fronius weak antenna itself that is the main issue.

  • +1

Buy a home mesh kit. Even a cheap one and put a node nearby. Problem solved?

    • Thanks bro. Wasn't really keen on the home mesh as we dont have issues with any of the other phone/tablet/IoT devices at home - it was just this Fronius is giving me a hard time. I would rather just add another Long Range access point to my edgerouter if that will really help.

      • I got a wifi on my new Growatt. I can't be bummed connecting it to the wifi and using the app (another app to take up space). I have AGL app that shows me pretty much day in arrears what my net numbers are.

  • There is a heap of info on this on the whirlpool forum while a little old in date which seems to point back to a firmware update.
I know its hard if you have wifi issues but it is likely in the background of the datamanager ready to be installed.
And yes a mesh system may also help.

    • Thanks mate. I checked out whirlpool and several posts also mentioned the replacement of the fronius antenna - however not much info was provided in the actual model of the antenna used and how far it is being relocated.

  • I got the installer to wire up an ethernet cable i use to plug directly into my router
