Photographer for Newborn - on a Budget (under $1,000)

Trying to find somewhere to get a newborn photographed in my house in Sydney without breaking the bank…

So many places seem to charge $200-$300 for the session, then like $1200 for all the digital photos.

Hoping to find somewhere that does it under $1k?

Send me your advice/recommendations!

    Slim to none.

FWIW We went here for all 3 of ours (plus 2 bump ones). Amelia is great!

How expensive can they be, a newborn can hardly hold a camera?
    boom tish
I'll be here all week folks.

not at your home but they have all the props

We "won" a sitting session for our first (then 6 month old), but then the photos were $1000. All or nothing.

For our second we went with https://adaevephotography.com.au/

It was the most reasonably priced I found that also included sibling shots, and the photographer Sarah was absolutely lovely. However it is in her studio not in your house.

There aren't that many which are on site, and they will be more like candid shots rather than your typical newborn session because they won't have the usual props and backdrops, lighting etc. It's worth a trip out to a studio if those are the kind of shots you're after. Sarah has a lounge there which she said many first time parents fall asleep on!

You could also join your local "mums" Facebook group, there are often posts asking for suggestions for photographers or monthly business posts from the photographers themselves. You might find some ones that will go to your house if you're after candid shots.

    • Did you "win" from FB without entering a competition? 😂

      • +1

Well I did enter it in my sleep deprived state I think, so I probably shouldn't say "won"…but it did end up costing more than a lot of places where you don't win anything and just pay as normal! And the lady put us under a lot of pressure to choose photos or leave without any; it had to be done on the spot. I still see her competitions popping up on FB so she's still running her business like that, until I blocked it cause the memory of it annoyed me so much. It is just unusual for me not to have done any research first.

Was her name Yulia? That was the lady we did it with, we threatened her with bad review and she gave us all the photos for the price of one. 😂

          • +1

@John Kimble: Haha it certainly was! You're more assertive than we were, we just paid it under pressure as we didn't want to be confrontational. She's changed the name of the business too.

Do it at their studio, not your house. Don't get a photographer from airtasker.

So you want an experienced photographer with professional grade equipment (camera's, lenses, computer, software) to take amazing photos. You want them to drive to your house, spend a few hours there with props, drive home, spend half a day post processing your dream images and pay less than $1k?

    Lol.

Pay up or take them yourself FFS.

    • +3

$1000 for a day's work seems fairly good to me.

Plus help repay $25k in equipment, their rent/mortgage and years of minimal pay to build experience.

        • +1

$1,000 a day assuming they work at least 150 days of the year is still a good wage (not by ozbargain standards) they will pay off the equipment costs in no time, and everyone starts out on a low salary.

  • Photography convention and law says that the photographer owns the photos and you then need to license specific images for specific purposes. This is why the photo sessions are so cheap because it doesn't get you the rights to the photos themselves. There was a wildlife photo years ago where a monkey pressed the shutter button and there was huge doubt over who owned the photo, because laws say whoever presses the shutter button owns the photo…

  • I also enjoy capturing that moment a newborn mammal flops out of the womb encased in a great load of Nickelodeon slime.
A truly magnificent moment. Magically captured in 60 Megapixel.

Link to Nickelodeon slime (I found it when searching how to spell Nickelodeon lol).

    Hi everyone,

Appreciate the insights on the significant costs.

I just have different friends in Wollongong who have paid around 6-700 ish for good quality photography and all photos digitally.

I just thought it weird that nothing in Sydney is in the same ballpark.

    Thanks people!

    • +2

You're surprised things in Sydney cost more than Wollongong?

      • +1

Im surprised firstly how snarky so many people were in this forum.

And surprised about the BALLPARK. Costs are easily double here

          Are you new here?

        • -1

Not snarky, just staying a fact.

If you work in a professional/skilled role living and live in Sydney, would you be happy earning Sydney level wages or out of Sydney level wages?

    • If you have a flagship smartphone you could buy some soft boxes and try take some photos yourself. Courts in the US ruled years ago that iPhone Pro does indeed take "studio quality" photos when a photographer tried to legally challenge Apple's claim. You might spend more time than you can spare learning how to take good photos though, so $1,000 for an experienced photographer's time could be a bargain.

      • If you have some nice windows, you don't even need softboxes. Can DIY a reflector with some cardboard and white cloth though to balance out the light a bit.

Why don't you create a post along the lines of first: Did anyone who spent around $1k on newborn photos think it was worth in a couple of years later (leaving aside any sunk cost biases)?

I've shot newborns in their homes before. It's pretty difficult! And it's a 100% guarantee that the parents will get poop, pee and vomit on them.

How many shots/positions are you expecting? And how old is the child? (In my opinion, real newborn photos have to be taken less a month from birth - they get big pretty quickly!)

Just a price comparison, it was $220 for me in Perth. Thus was few months back and she visits hospitals with her portable studio.

The lady was amazing, baby whisperer. Passionate and good in her job. We were given the all the shots.

I didn't even negotiate the price

These hospital visiting photographers are cheap because they knock out a dozen clients in the morning. Post process in the afternoon. Winning.

How many images did you get out of curiosity?

      • 52 images with half being exact of the picture in black and white so technically 26 individual images.

Of the 26 images, I would be happy to print any of them and display it as a large canvas print.

That said, no idea if that's a lot or little in terms of baby photos.

  • This is probably too late for you now, but zbyzahrah.com.ah does great newborn photos. Some examples.
