  • How much do these bottles of Grange go up in price over the years?

    • +4

You prob missed buying the grange as an investment by a couple or so decades.

Then also you can't actually sell alcohol without a license so you’ll need to use a place that has one on your behalf, so some commission is involved etc

Imho I’d say buy it to enjoy or cellar but not as an investment. It’s not a bad price considering rrp is $900. But also imho, no wine is worth this much.

        Exactly

They use to be $40, then $200, then $400 etc.

They don't go up much now, unless you're waiting 30+ years.

You're better off investing in alot of French, which goes up, even napa valley.

Yeah and auction houses take 15% from sellers and charge buyers 15% so that's a loss of 30% already here.

Agree with that for the most part. Vintages that are 40 or 50 years old often see some price acceleration on secondary markets in the run up to people celebrating significant birthdays!

I recall watching 1971 Grange (a great vintage) go from around $700 to around $1500 a couple of years ago.

In my humble opinion best off with 1971 Hardy’s Nottage Hill for about $20 and save $1300!

Vega Sicilia the same. A few years ago $450 per bottle. Now $600+.

If you’re in the market for a Grange I think this is a bloody good deal.

        • Thanks for the info everyone

    • Penfolds have already sucked the value out of collecting Grange by pricing it so high at release. It's a bad investment for a number of reasons but mainly it's not a single vineyard wine. It's not only multi vineyard but multi regional. This has great advantages in terms of consistency vintage to vintage but it also means theoretically there's no limit to the quantity they can produce. Penfolds limit production to around 10,000 cases per vintage which is a massive amount compared to a single cru wine. There's a lot of it around. Its sister wine, St Henri is also produced similarly. Personally i think a much better value wine. If i was to invest in wine at the moment i would be looking to Piedmont. Barolo and Barbaresco etc represent far better value in terms of collectability, rarity, ageability and quality. Burgundy is also a good option but there is far less value in these wines. Prices have skyrocketed in recent years.

    • price rises aren’t linear …..there was a BIG jump for the 1990 ….price went up 500% in one year i bought my 1990 for $100 per bottle, then it got write up as best wine in the world and went to $500 in a matter of weeks ..then the rises have been small, and demand is driven also by quality of a vintage …..2018 was a great year …..2019 and 2017 not as great …… the people that 1991 expecting price rises like 1990 didn’t get them ….it’s wasnt rated best wine in the world ……..

you have definitely misssed the boat if you are buying to invest ……

and it’s not like gold bullion that lasts for ever … wine is a perishable product, hits a peak in quality as it develops more complexity as molecules form, and then later break apart and then declines …..
