Opinion: Career and/or Life Coaching

Hi all

Am currently reviewing where I've got to in life and feel left behind compared to peers. I accept that there are uniqueness of circumstance and individual ability that contribute to this.

I stubled upon www.fingerprintforsuccess.com as part of my reading and they offer AI based coachjng services. I previously had a career coach as part of a COVID redundancy package and felt that beyond some basic help re: transitioning to a new role (CV help etc), there was not much more they offered in terms of career planning and seeking fulfilment.

How have the more middle aged ozB community fared with career and life coaches? Looking to understand what value was obtained and how long the relationships were maintained. Estimates of costs would be appreciated too.

  • You would get more value joining a professional body related to your career. They may offer pathways to develop yourself and move up the career ladder, obtain chartered status, accreditation, courses & continued professional development. Tons of networking opportunities with cross-industry peers and free mentoring/coaching support from those further up the chain.

    e.g. https://aipm.com.au/ or https://managersandleaders.com.au/ or https://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/

    • Thank you for the suggestion. I will check these out.
I had joined one other organisation but the direct benefits were limited in my career pathway.

Why don't you try to find a potential retired mentor in the field you want or any field for that matter and take them out for coffee and chat and see if they want to catch up informally every now and then. Go from there.

Forget AI - sounds like templates sent out by lowly paid third world administrators.

    • Yes, I am skeptical about AI led coaching esp. If there is no human involvement.

I've seen psychological treatment delivered via online channels. Not AI led but more elearns. In this case you are meant to be monitored and guided by a human.

  • What field are you in? Why do you feel you need a life coach?

went to a career coach about 12 years ago and I did not find it particularly helpful. If you know what you want and just need help to get there, then I think it can work. However, there was nothing on career satisfaction or similar. I stopped going after he told me the careers that I am "suited for", which I already knew.

I did end up making a career change but no thanks to career coaching

  • @brendanm happy to pm with more details.

Had a varied career but currently doing IT program delivery. I feel that my peers (from where I used to work) are moving faster in terms of titles and pay.

I entered mid-life and am thinking of quitting a 6-figure, comfortable job to work in hospitality earning award wage, being paid by the hour … it is scary as hell. My heart says go for it, and my mind says to play it safe. I have only one chance in this life, and I am betting on myself. There is no growth in being comfortable. I'd rather try and fail, than fail by not doing.

    • If I may ask, what is motivating your change? What do you see as the growth potential in the new career?

    • Username checks out.

    • Depends on how comfortable financially you are. If no debt and low expenses then go for it.

    • Take a month unpaid leave from your office job, work full time in hospo.
Decide a month later with a clear head (and, I predict sore feet) on what both jobs entail.
If that doesn’t sound like common sense, and you need the risk/adventure of throwing it all in, well, you can still throw it all in after a month.

    • Hospitality is, especially working as a chef, incredibly exhausting both mentally and physically. I've noticed over the last 6 years that there are disproportionately more toxic people and work culture in hospitality than any other industry.

Before you commit to it, I urge you to take on some part time job working on weekends for at least a few months, and see if this is really what you want.

  • When you say you're feeling left behind compared to your peers, how so? What sort of roles are your peers are transitioning to? Are they people management, project management or subject matter expert type roles? I think traditional "career pathways" typically only really consider people management as a form of progression, but IMO the others are important pathways too.

  • Just get married. She'll tell you what to do. No lifecoach needed.
