Need Some Opinions - Supplier of Gas/Electricity in Victoria - Which one is better?

Hi OZ,

I am with AGL from last 7 years and really didn't look at the bill/ charges as was paid via Direct debit etc.

Lately lost my job and trying to trim down expenses till I have another role..

I found a letter in the mail that the prices for Gas and electricity are going up - and really wants to seek some help as like to switch if better or if someone can guide me to choose a right provider in Victoria…I am in watsonia.

Thanks

  • I need some advice for Adelaide too…

    • In my experience, SA is not a lucrative market for retailers. There's only one distribution network (ETSA), so it's a lot less complex than the other states. Compared to Victoria, there isn't a huge difference between the most expensive retailer and the cheapest retailer for a given tariff type.

  • +1
  • Assuming you're on tariff A100 (Jemena resi single rate), Momentum appears to be a good option according to YourChoice. I've worked with them in the past and they are a fairly decent Australian based company. It is also (unaccredited) renewable energy.

Their rates are 19.68 c/kWh and 63.01 c/day (excl. GST). Using these rates as a benchmark, call a few cheap tier 2 retailers (Dodo, Powerdirect, Lumo, Click off the top of my head) and energy brokers and see if they can offer you a better price. Many special offers are not advertised or published on YourChoice. Always ask for the GST exclusive rate after all applicable discounts so that you can easily compare.

Depending on your next scheduled meter read date, it may be advisable for you to request an early meter read. This will cost extra but may (or may not) save you a bit more money.

I'm not up-to-date on resi gas rates but Energy Australia have generally been quite good in Victoria.

  • Yep I'm getting 17.1 c/kWh peak only (gst exclusive) with momentum. No carbon tax for 3 years.

  • Thanks Guys….seems like momemtum is a go for me..Thx..What will I do without this site - I wonder!!! Thanks Thanks Thanks…

    • Good choice. Momentum offer a 3 year contract where they only increase the prices by pass through charges (unavoidable regulated charges) and CPI. This should in theory result in lower increases than some of the other suppliers.

I might be wrong, but as Smilepower is renewable energy, there might be no carbon tax.
