RTX 4080 Vs 4090 for a New Build

Hi guys, first post.

I have the chance of buying a pny xrl8 4080 for $1400, my original plan was I wanted a 4090 as everywhere I read said 4080 is no good.

Does the price point of $1400 for the 4080 make it a much better card than being priced at $2.2k? What would you guys do in this situation?

I only plan on general use and gaming (some plex streaming from this machine).

  • I would question why and how you're getting over $500 off a 4080 in the first instance.

I'm not sure how that's relevant but a friend got it as a gift and has no use for it, so he's happy to take a loss not dealing with ebay/gumtree and he knows I'm thinking of upgrading my pc

In that case go for the 4080.

It's relevant in that you're not ordering off a dodgy website abroad or such which many have done before.

        • Good thing is, it is sealed.

Thanks for your input, I was leaning that way but just worried I'm hamstringing myself.

I'm coming from a 2080ti so seems to be a decent jump (considering I paid $2.2k for this damn thing awhile ago).

I just constantly read 4080 SUCKS everywhere which was putting me off.

@hellas: 4080's performance/price proposition is not great hence the comments, but it's still a mighty high performance card. Only you can answer if you actually need the upgrade over a 2080Ti (depends on your use).

Make sure you get the receipt for any future warranty claims.

The 4080 is only bad from a price to performance ratio.

    • Does this pricing now make it a good price to performance ratio? and also potentially make the 4090 in my situation now the bad pricing/performance ratio?

      • they are comparing it against 3080 price on the launch day
        1080 is $599 USD
2080 is $699 USD (they have $799 version too)
        3080 is $699 USD
        4080 is $1199 USD

  • I'll buy the 4080 for $1500,

I finally got it but thinking of going 4090 instead, you still interested?

It's still sealed and I'm not gonna have a use for it.

        See you're pm

The 4080 isn't a bad card by any stretch - all reviewers are saying it's fantastic hardware. it's just the price that sours everyone's opinion. so at that price definitely jump on it!

    • There were times where people would pay $2000+ for a new Graca

it is a bad hardware, its the most cut down 80 class card from a 90 class. nvdia could've made it faster but they decide to screw us over and save it for a 4080ti

  • I have a PNY 4080 XLR8 in my system and it is excellent at the 2 games I've tried on it - MSFS @ 4K Ultra settings and VR and Half Life Alyx max settings. I paid $1900 new and would jump all over a $1400 still in box offer if I didn't already have one.

  • Yeah the 4080 at that price is pretty amazing.

    I would go for it.
