Myer Gift Card Expired - They Not Extending

My Myer gift card has been expired 5 months ago.. Yes we came out from Lockdown 1.5 years ago.. but half of the validity period of the card - we were in lockdown, and I couldnt use it.

Spoke to a customer care member, who didnt even tried to help,, was told money is gone, ( she sounds like "I dont care, get lost")

These gift cards are such a good income for these businesses.. So if my $50 is gone, its gone to Myer or is it going to a charity? I know I am whining , its $50 down in the drain :(

Myer Gift Card Expired - they not extending

Use it or lose it - that's the nature of gift cards.

True,, its just great income for these companies - I just read, many people forget to use the cards, and these businesses pocketing the money… Yes there is 3 year validity, but sometimes, you just forget

      • I have plenty of gift cards ive yet to use (over $800 worth) and keep them all in a simple note on my iphone that tells me when i bought them and when they expire - you gotta do the same thing from now on

.. but sometimes, you just forget

        …so who's fault is that?

  • Wasn't there a new law that such cards don't expire?

"Gift cards purchased on or after 1 November 2019 must be redeemable for at least 3 years after the day they were supplied or purchased".

      • yes at least it is 3 years now…

        • +1

It is three years now in most situations, but there are exclusions to this rule (as listed on the ACCC page linked above). In other words, the three year rule is not a blanket rule.

That is how you can have Myer issuing gift cards with a ten day or three month validity (as examples).

Myer had been doing online orders…… and honestly you had 3 years to use it up. It sucks but that is the name of the game these days!

It sounds more like OP forgot to use their gift card and blamed it on lockdowns.

  • +1

lets say they did extend it, how much longer do you think is reasonable, op?

    1 month?
    1 year?
    10 years?
    infinite?

    • infinite?

I like the idea of gift cards as heirlooms — handed down through the generations. Maybe frame them when inflation renders them almost worthless…

“My great, great grandma originally owned this one. And the store is still in the same place as it was when she bought it! Of course, the company has changed ownership several times over the years, and gone bankrupt twice. But hey, I’m pretty sure I can still use this gift card!”

Gift cards….like cash, but less useful.

    • They’re prettier, and that’s a big plus in my opinion. I don’t particularly want a picture of Charlie on my instruments of commerce

  • A bit like keeping some leftover currency from an overseas trip and forgetting about it and when you next find it and get a chance to use it, you find out that those specific notes have been withdrawn by the issuing Central Bank.

    I’m not overly surprised.

There really is nothing that would legally force Myer to extend the gift card expiry in your situation, so you are completely reliant on a goodwill gesture. Some issuers (e.g. Coles Group) are usually nice enough to extend a gift card’s validity for a short period of time, but I would not expect Myer to be as nice.

These gift cards are such a good income for these businesses..

Precisely! It’s not an accident so many retailers run their own gift card scheme.

    Think about it this way:

    • If you purchase an item from Myer using a credit card, Myer has the item, but you have the money. When you complete the transaction, Myer will give you the item and you give Myer the money.

    • If you purchase an item from Myer using a Myer gift card, Myer has both the money and the item. It is only when you redeem the balance of the Myer gift card that you will get the item.

So if my $50 is gone, it’s gone to Myer or is it going to a charity?

I think it is safe to say that Myer has booked the $50 as profit. I would not except a department store like Myer to be so charitable…

  • Myer or charity? Myer is pretty much a charity these days…. won't be around much longer.

  • Are you also saving up sex for old age.

  • My giftcard from Myer expired 3 months ago and now they can't refund it, $100 lost for no reason…

The reason is that it expired.

Gift cards like your cash - they should never expired - its like your bank card, after you deposit your money into your account it will stay there…

JB HI FI cards says "no Expiry date"

OR at least these companies should transfer these funds from expired gift cards to charity organisations,, not keeping them as profit

  • I totally agree these cards should never expire. Why should after a period of time what ever money that doesn’t get used should go to Cole’s/ myers group. This I thought was illegal. How is it that they can put money on a card which restricts your spending to that shop only and if you don’t get to use it or just forget they get to keep the money? It’s a bloody scam!
