Travelling with an eSIM

I’ve got an eSIM on my Woolworths Mobile and once I got it setup correctly it’s great. But we’re going overseas soon and going to get a SIM card so not sure on the best way to do it…I guess I delete my eSIM profile and then just activate the new SIM?

I know I can get a new eSIM profile with Woolworths Mobile but I can’t find how to do it on the iOS app?

Why would you delete the eSIM? You can dual SIM, so leave the eSIM as-is and put in your travel SIM card as per normal.

You may need the Woolworths mobile one to get banking text messages etc.

+1. You definitely do not need to delete the eSIM. Just switch SIM profiles in your settings.

    • Ah cheers so I just activate the new sim on the second line?

I won’t have roaming turned on so won’t need it until I come home.

Yes. I did it with woolworth mobile (same as yours). I leave eSim active for text and call.
And use local sim for data (text and call can be active too)

      • Ah sweet thanks. Did you activate roaming to get text & call?

Perfect yeah I only use data when overseas.

No don't delete it!!! You can have more than 1 eSIM on a device, but depending on the device only 1 or 2 active at the same time.

When you pop a physical SIM in, you'll be able to select which SIM/profile you want active for data and which is the primary for calls etc.

So might be best to disable the eSIM and you'll then work fully off your physical SIM card.

I did it the other way round last time I travelled. My number is in the physical SIM card, so just popped a travel eSIM on the device.

    • Cheers for that. The reason I thought to delete was when I activated it I couldn’t make calls and it was because my old sim was still in the phone. So I assumed if another sim is in the phone the eSIM would have issues.

So I just turn off my Aussie number on the primary line and active the new sim on the secondary line? I’d get an eSIM but we’re going to Bali and I don’t think they have it 🤷🏽‍♂️

    • @JimmyF Hey man, no need for me to post a new thread, so hopefully you'll have the answer.

I have an iPhone 12, which can have active 1 sim and 1 eSim simultaneously, both currently in use. I'm travelling next month and will get a local eSim. I'll need to swap back to my Australian eSim at least twice while I'm away. Is it easy enough to swap to and fro? No activation process?

      Thank you

Once the esim is loaded, you can select which ones are used. No need to delete them etc. So when you want to go back, just make your aussie one active and then back to your travelling one when finished.

        • And I can do that while overseas? Awesome. Thanks, mate.

          • @Morien: You can I did it with my Australian eSIM and had a physical SIM while overseas. I didn’t know it was that easy until comments here told me not to remove my eSIM profile but to just turn it off.

I usually use Truphone for all my travel sim needs. A few days before you leave, you can install the app, download the eSIM and activate it. From memory, you also get a free trial to test out the service and make sure you have all the APNs set even before you leave AUS.
Obviously, you'd be paying a little more than buying a local sim, but the benefit is you have your data active as soon as your flight lands. No need to go through the trouble of finding a retailer, giving them copies of your passport, calling the telco to activate it etc. etc.

I used to use Felixroam before, but lately they have been so bloody expensive.

    • Oh wow I’ve never heard of anything like this and it works in any country?

      • Yeah, they have a long list of countries they work in. Because you said Bali, I just checked Indonesia. A plan of 5GB for 30 days will set you back AU$23.

One thing to remember is to set up the eSIM while you're still here because it does need a data connection to set up. So if you're already there with no wifi, you'd not be so lucky, especially as you need to go through the web tutorial of setting up your APNs.

        • I see good to know thank you so much.

I’ll look into it and decide. We’re not there for very long so I might just go a traditional one.
