these will become unwanted gifts all over eBay and Facebook marketplace

  • when checking it out goes up tp $596???????????

    • +1

      Party is over now

  • +17

$596.49 now, hate how Lego is an investment now instead of a fun hobby.

    • ^^^this. My thoughts exactly

Makes sense, people buy all these "set pieces" which is no different to old model cars, except instead of painting it yourself it comes pre-colored.
Old lego (pre collection phase) was far more about kids building misc stuff out of blocks, and not IP tie-ins and sets you build once then "display".

I'd prefer to buy a knockoff of misc pieces for my kids to play with in a creative, self directed way, but i'm not sure if any brands of bricks would be compatible and decent quality.

Edit: well, i found you can still buy non-trademarked bulk sets for a reasonable price, even though some people try selling old buckets of misc pieces for more than this: https://www.amazon.com.au/LEGO-Classic-Creative-10698-Playse…

      I bought one to build

    • To be fair, this set has been out for quite a while now and has been on sale (maybe not this low) many many times. Most of the time it only becomes and investment once it’s retired so just about everyone has a chance to buy @ retail and just hold onto it if they are happy to tie up the money and space.

  • If you see 600 from gumtree, buy it. Cheap

    • Why? Cheaper on Amazon with gift cards and free delivery.

  • +1

    Sale is gone back 596+

  • -1

    Sale over, $600 again.

I wonder how much of the price goes to the licensor for the trademark & likeness?
$600 is a phenomenal amount of money for half a kilo of molded plastic.

    • -1

And $2k is a phenomenal amount of money for 250g of mould metals and plastic, in which they sell as phones and computers. But yet they sell them by the truck load.

      • +2

Implying the R&D cost behind 5 nanometer ICs in complex electronics systems should be similar to lego designs - as neat as they are - is hugely disingenuous.

        • +1

And is there no r&d behind the this lego machine? Ever tried to free build something decent out of lego? It’s bloody hard

          • @flashi007: Where did I say there is no r&d behind lego? I made a statement about the huge dissimilarity of the r&d. Even with lego's artists/builders, and their modernizing with better software/tooling, it's completely insignificant compared to the r&d that goes into (for example) a new lithography. When you buy an iphone, you're perhaps paying 200% or 300% the price of what you would if it were 100% a commodity item. With a lego set like this, i'd like to see some evidence that you're not paying 10x of what you would were it a commodity, without IP licensing, and even taking into account the different production scales.

            • @ssfps: Where did I imply anything about r&d for either product? I replied to your original post which was simply about raw materials. My reply was also about raw materials in other products. To bring other matters into the conversation is the only thing here that is hugely disingenuous. Obviously only done in attempt to avoid embarrassment.

              • @Maloo: The implication in your original comment is in the phrase:

And $2k is a phenomenal amount of money for 250g of mould metals and plastic

R&D is the process which turns those raw materials into a product.

Thus i read it as implied youre making a comment about the product development costs (/marketing/misc)
Please enlighten me where i misunderstood your original point. (Happy to be corrected).

I'm also confused what embarrassment you think i was trying to save myself? You think i'm embarrassed by saying $600 is a lot of money for molded plastic that isn't footing the bill for some recent intense research? I stand by that.

                • @ssfps: Yawn. Stand there for as long as you want.

            • @ssfps: I’m with 👆🏾

Time to buy one and tell Andrew Tate, I got one but you don't 😉

No sparkling water in Romanian prison.

      • Well, he might get some sparkling liquid of another kind

  • +2

    what color is your bugatti?

    • +2

      Boogaht-ee

  • +5

I want one with same color like TopG.

  • Was a decent piece for a legit version.

  • Search for Lepin on AliExpress.

    • +2

Lepin is absolute garbage compared to genuine LEGO

      • some lepin models have a decent review on youtube regarding the similarities and quality

  • Wish I came across a crate of 1000 or so of these I could sell for RRP, then I could go out and buy a real one for myself. I loved Lego as a kid but to me this price is unconscionable… It has prompted me to spend part of my Sunday looking for information on how to invest in Lego, as they have worked out how to turn plastic into far more value than its weight in gold and it sold out instantly the minute a sale went on it! Sorry, I know this is some people's passion but at this level is this price gouging?

  • So now I can tell people my first car is gonna be a bugatti

  • Got mine delivered today. Supposedly retired but packed in a Lego box dated 14 December 2022 from Lego and then inside an Amazon box. So fresh stock. Kind of regretting not buying two
