Connecting Flights on One World Partner Airlines

Does anyone know how this works with regards to missed connections due to a delay on the first leg?

I'm looking to book a Finnair flight to Doha, followed by a connecting flight via Qatar back to Perth. I have 2 hours 50 minutes to collect luggage and check in to the next flight etc. as it seems they will not tag the luggage through or provide boarding passes. Which should be fine provided there are no delays. But my concern is if the first leg is delayed and causes me to miss the second leg, will I lose my flight?

The Qatar to Perth leg will be booked using points. Is there any clarity on whether they will rebook me on the next flight? I've tried reaching out to both airlines and the answers haven't exactly been clear.

If they are being booked separately, there under no obligation to put you on a later flight.

Only if the flights are on the same ticket will the second airline look after you. Saying that sometimes you can call up the airline beforehand and link the flights together so they know when there are delays, but since they are differing airlines, there is no guarantee on being looked after.

    • This is pretty much the correct answer. Wholly depends if it's a single ticket or separate bookings.

  • Correct as above - if they're on the same ticket, they'll rebook you. If not, they aren't required to.

Put it all on the same booking and save yourself a headache

    • Not sure that's an option? How would I go about doing that?

      • Qantas should be able to facilitate this via a code share multi stop. Is there a reason you need to travel finnair.

        • Flight is Rovaniemi to Doha via Helsinki, seems to be the only option to come back to Perth without heading backwards towards London etc

Unfortunately my points are on velocity so booking via Qantas won't help either.

I did try book via Qatar but the flights cost significantly more when doing this for some reason, despite being the same flight via codeshare.

@The Hobo: In this case as it is a long intercontinental flight i'd just forgo the points option and book it all through a single booking company - not worth blowing the points personally.

            • @Drakesy: Seems that way - though we may just book the flight out of Doha the following day and spend the day exploring the city. Works out less out of pocket that way

              Thanks for your help!

  • All part of oneworld so should be checked through

  • I assumed they had a baggage agreement between Finnair and Qatar to be able to tag the bags to final destination as they recently started a new partnership. Baggage agreements are different to codeshare etc as the only thing it does is allow the checkin bag to be tagged to the final destination when you're checking in. Unless it's because you're booked on the va flight # though. That may impact the ability to bag tag all the way. Unfortunately going by memory and no access to check different baggage agreements anymore
There's probably a list out there somewhere tho.
