How Do You Store Your Video Games/DVDs/Blu-Rays?

Hi all
Looking to expand my shelving unit to more neatly store my movie cases and was wondering what everyone else does.

If you use shelving, do you have a bookcase? How many cases do you own? What case or shelves do you use?

I'm using some cheap ~1m tall IKEA bookcases at the moment and all of them are starting to bow under the weight of reckless consumerism

Any (cheap) storage and display solutions are welcome

Copy them to two HDs then ditch the DVDs/Blu-Rays

    • +2

A Blu Ray holds ~50gb of data. A 4k disc up to 100gb. 2 hard Drives would not hold my collection. Your advice is unhelpful

      • +1

This. Plus harddrives, while generally getting cheaper over time, can still fail and breakdown.

        • -3

          that's why I said x2 , have a copy.

      • +7

Just get x2 18T hard disks, that can put 300+ movies. I think you are around 23+ years too late. There was time that I had them in a nicely ordered on a shelf, even had MS Access app to catalogue them.

Plus if you haven't seen the same movie for second time for last 2 years, ditch them or sell it for $2 in FB.

I store the USB stick in a drawer and stream the rest over this thing called the internet. It's pretty cool. Check it out sometime.

Hope you're okay. You just seem to comment unhelpful shit all over this site. Might be time to log off for a while?

        • +5

Seeing as you can't store a disc on a USB, only it's content, your comment was, again, unhelpful

            • +1

@Muzeeb: I like to see their reaction, if they ever discover torrents on the internet ;)

              • +1

@boomramada: It's been said hundreds of times before, unless you download 100+GB file sizes, disc is still superior for sound and image quality. Your snarkiness is just boring

                • +1

                  @Ninternet:

unless you download 100+GB file sizes, disc is still superior for sound and image quality.

Well considering you included DVD in your list, that's clearly not entirely accurate.

Either way, would be interested in your viewing and audio setup that goes along with your collection.

                  • @SBOB: LG C2 with Samsung q990B.

DVD was a generalisation as most people I know have those still more likely than Blu Ray.

My DVDs are minimal and are generally restricted to things that don't have a Blu Ray release in our region or are significantly cheaper than their blu ray versions (e.g. The Chaser, Tokyo Story)

                    • +2

                      @Ninternet:

                      Samsung q990B

Not sure the superior sound quality of your source media is going to benefit from this.

                      Regardless, IKEA->bookshelf, job done.

Been there, done that, still have plenty of old DVDs under the bed in crates I can't bear to dispose of.
Some very old original R1 DVDs bought back when international Amazon purchases via beenz credits was a thing (that's how old or rare some are :) )

                      • @SBOB: Why would the source media not benefit from the q990b?

                        • +3

                          @Ninternet:

Why would the source media not benefit from the q990b?

The superior audio quality of your disc media, compared to downloaded source options, is being wasted on a Samsung sound bar.

Been there done that, currently run a full surround Sonos soundbar setup for practicality and less cluttered reasons, but have had overly expensive surround setups in the past due to a previous life working in hifi stores.

Just helps not to kid yourself that you wouldn't use steaming media sources because you want the pure highest sound quality source, and then pump it through a soundbar setup.

                          • @SBOB: It sounds like you haven't had a q990b. Most reviews consider it on par with the Sonos range for watching movies. I did a lot of research before investing in such a setup

                            • +3

@Ninternet: I also don't consider a Sonos system the height of audiophile quality..kind of missing the point.

Anyway, enjoy the illusion that your getting the true peak audio quality due to using physical media .

                • +3

@Ninternet: Haven't you heard of NBN, 100gb is like walking in the park. it's time to comes to the dark side buddy :=)

                  • @boomramada: Do you stand in front of churches too and tell them to stop believing in God because, for whatever reason, their choice bothers you?

                    • +1

@Ninternet: Why would you be talking to a church? They building won't answer back.

                      • @Muzeeb: You're really aiming for JV's throne, huh?

                        • +1

@Ninternet: Stop taking the bait then.

                          • -5

@Muzeeb: Consider a therapist rather than seeking negative attention online.

Therapists will listen to you say whatever you want and, if you cooperate, you may even figure out ways to emotionally mature so you don't need to look for dopamine hits online in the form of aggravated comments.

                            • +5

@Ninternet: Given you've responded to just about every comment on this thread, I think you might be the one who needs to talk to someone… Calm down dude.

Stop being a twat to everyone replying with their setups, just because it doesn't match what you want. If you didn't want to hear what other people do, don't post a thread asking for it.

                              • -1

@jaxpylon: I didn't ask for people to tell me about their digital copies and why they threw away their DVDs.

It's obviously a frustrating experience to be told the same unwanted information again and again.

Would it be different if I asked people how they stored their shoes and everyone told me I should just go barefoot?

Would it be different if I asked people how they stored their guitars and they responded that I should just make electronic music?

Don't conflate the question with the responses.

                                • +1

@Ninternet: My 2 regular use guitars are hanging on the wall. My daily is on a stand next to the amp. I've got 3 others in hard cases that I use to mix it up on rotation.

                                  Thanks for asking.

IKEA Billy is always the answer. Only issue is they're pretty deep shelves.

You could opt for the Artiss low quality dedicated units too I suppose.

    • I'm using the Billy ones currently and they're the ones bowing under weight now unfortunately

      • +2

Billy's are designed for books which are far heavier than optical media cases… Each shelf is supposed to support 30 KG. Something is wrong with yours.

Have you looked into adding support pins or brackets for the shelves?

      • +1

I do not see how this is possible, ive had several of these for over a decade and i put much heavier things on them like double stacked rows of hardcover books, and none of them have ever bowed.

For storing blurays and dvs specifically i use the right size plastic storage containers.

        • I don't know why I would make up the fact that the 4 Billy IKEA bookshelves I have in the house all have bowing shelves to some degree.

One has heavy hardcover books, another has switch games, a third has ps4 and Xbox titles and the fourth has movies

          • @Ninternet: I even have one close to 2 decades old that is still going strong. Have you made sure that the rear of the case is solidly drilled into the wall at the top ?
The rear of the case connecting to the wall adds extra sturdiness to the bookshelf. If you still have the paperwork for it, look at the supporting weight limits on the shelves. Then weigh what you have on there. Something is definitely wrong if they are bowing.

            • @garetz: Rental. Cannot drill into walls.

              • @Ninternet: That is definitely the problem. The limit on those shelves should be half of what its rated for. You need to reduce the weight on those shelves asap.

                • +2

@garetz: It's half the reason I made this post. Instead people just tell me to stop owning movies

                  • +2

@Ninternet: As a physical game collector (approx 250x PS5 games), you get that a lot. Just ignore the noise, you do you.

    • +2

I would have said Gnedby rather than Billy for DVDs and Blu-Rays.

      • Too slim for larger several-hundreds collections and cases would stick out as wider than the unit itself so not ideal personally.

  • +1

I got a bookcase made up that could take two box sets deep. I, also, converted an old steamer trunk to take DVDs and CDs. It is blue velvet lined.

    • +1

Just watched Blue Velvet last night. You're contributing to my Lynchian dreamstate 😶‍🌫️

  • +1

When I was looking at those old DVD/CD binders and bluray, I found many comments warning not to use them with bluray discs. Not sure if it is that they are easier to scratch, or that any markings is more devastating. Not sure… aaaanyway, physical media takes up a lot of valuable room, and you've got to decide whether it is worth having in your case.

In my case, streaming is just not an enjoyable option. I have all my media remuxed onto a server (presently at about 80TB or storage), and then all physical media gathers dust on bookshelves.

  • I've been following this guy on IG - https://www.instagram.com/lukelikesgames/?hl=en

He's famous for having a HUGE games wall with literally hundreds of games and memorabilia.

He recently had to take it all down as moving house - but he did a recent AMA and I think he said his ones were actually the cheapy ones from ozplaza or similar ebay supplier.
Might be worth to message him, as the proof of how well they go is in practically every single one of his IG posts…

I also had a really old OG Billy given to us some years back and yeah, bowing is definitely an issue.
I reinforced with wood slats cut up from off-cut wood from work and it worked alright - but was ugly as hell lol
Ended up turfing it in the last kurbside pickup.

  • +1

Once I've watched them 3-5 times in 2yrs just sell em… they'd have to be extremely special to want to watch them much more than that.

if I wanna see em again after that either buy cheapy on evilbay or torrent.

Theres little point in having 100's and 100's of movies except to impress people when they visit.

    • -2

Sounds like you aren't that big on films as art though.

I have lots of foreign films that have high value and, ironically, low mass market appeal. Will be keeping them despite your lack of knowledge and advice on my collection 🤗

      • Sounds like you aren't that big on films as art though.

no I have films as entertainment for few hours.

      • +7

Ahh I see… the high yield investment Blu-Ray collection.

        • Find me a cheap Criterion Collection movie - secondhand or otherwise. Or something like any copy of Eraserhead on blu ray

While you're at it, kindly find me a cheap DVD copy of The Quiet Family too!

Should be cheap considering it's a silly thing to invest in! 😴

          • +3

@Ninternet: Do you really think watching Eraserhead on BD really makes ANY difference vs a decent MKV or even an old VHS?

Just because it costs a lot doesn't mean it's actually worth anything.

        • Have you seen some of the prices out of print DVD's & Blu Rays go for?

I don't buy Blu Ray's as an investment I buy them to enjoy the movie

          P.S I won't pay more than $3 a Blu Ray (second hand)

  • +2

In earlier times when intruders were able to realise some value on the secondhand market, I switched to storing the discs in high-capacity wallets - making them readily accessible for viewing and separating the cases to archive storage. The two need only be reunited if I ever sell them, which is now unlikely as they're pretty much worthless. Not having endless racks of DVD spines on display earns high Wife Approval Factor.

  • I am in the same situation of you, at the moment i'm sitting of over 300 Blurays and over 250 DVd and at least 400 videogames between nintendo and playstation, i use king furniture with storage to store all my videogames and some DVD, other DVDs i use another feet stool as a storage fit at least 150 DVds and currently use 5 billy bookcase for my bluray, and now i'm been selective when i buy 4k movies and storage in other new billy only for 4k movies, Hopefully will help

    • I'm slowly getting a clearer idea. Thanks!

  • I threw the DVDs and CDs in the trash and now I keep them all on a hard drive and just stream the rest.

    • Thanks for reiterating the same unasked-for and unhelpful information that has been mentioned a half dozen times already.

      Doing god's work 👍

      • I could have rented some storage space to keep them in, but it still would have been trash.

  • +3

Gotta love the “No, you’re not supposed to own movies anymore” sentiment.
I don’t collect them myself so I don’t have any advice to offer, but I can understand film enthusiast wanting to keep physical media.

"Bro, why do you have a car when Uber and buses exist. Driving yourself is obsolete"

      • +1

Although I have nothing to add to the original convo, this comment is not really a good comparison mate.

I live semi rural, and am a mobile IT consultant/technician so cost and wait for an Uber is extravagent and the nearest bus is an hour and a half walk away.

Driving is absolutely NOT obsolete. But I argue for some people that your media collection is not either. I have everything on a NAS and stream to all my devices any time, but a decent let's say 24Tb NAS setup is well over $2k. This makes it costly when BluRays on sale sometimes go as low as what? $20?

The way you do it is absolutely fine, not obsolete and nothing wrong with it. Nothing wrong with owning/driving your own car either though…..

        • +1

Most of my blu rays were bought for under $5

People need to stop with the assumptions.

I made my analogy for the absurdity of the comparison of other people telling me what to do with my collection despite having no information on it outside of the original post which, I would argue, is pretty ignorant.

  • I have a large gaming collection, depending on which format.
Some games being of a high value. Games on Gamecube/ps3/ps2/xbox360/wiiu can be ripped onto modded consoles and stored on 2TB hardrives. Heap of youtube videos on how to do this.

This is a great way to prevent accidetanl damage to gaming discs and keeping you drive to last longer.

With PS4, I tend wait for a sale on the digital copy and store the phyiscal game away.

Cant comment on blu-ray but a hardrive option would be out of the question.

  • +1

I'm noticing a trend lately… maybe it's always been there. Maybe I just never noticed until now.

People post a bargain on something and people comment "I'll take 10!" or "how many 4090s does it have?"

People ask about their hobby and people comment only to say how they don't share their hobby, and that it's dumb.

    Why?

Here's the scoop, guys. Other people can be different to you! What works for you is great… doesn't mean it works for everyone else. You actually CAN have different tastes!

  • +1

I agree with you about keeping the DVDs! I have several DVDs that are TV shows that I have bought from the US (I am an Aaron Sorkin addict - Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and SportsNight are superb) that were never on Aus TV and are not on any streaming services.

I did read an article today that I cannot find (of course) written by a woman who was doing the Marie Kondo on the house and wanted to get rid of her husband's DVDs, saying 'they're all on streaming services' - she's now glad she kept them as quite a few have been pulled from the streaming services.

    • +1

Read the same article actually. Pretty basic, but still interesting to see when people suddenly "realise"

    • +1

Not to mention that streaming services have started censoring tv shows, cutting episodes they consider "problematic" , editing bits out. Changing music

  • +1

Short on space so use a revolving tower. Modular shelving holds around 400 Blu-ray's ..cost around $200.

  • +8

It's crazy that some people here can't comprehend someone's inclination to want to proudly display a collection they've amassed.

Person: I'm running out of room in my library. What storage solutions do you use to store your books?
OzBargain: Omg you idiot, you could literally fit all those books onto one kindle.

  • Buy 2-3 units like this - https://www.kmart.com.au/product/8-cube-unit-white-42633297/

But if you don't want to display them, just keep - boxes and in the storage area/garage.

Also filter - remove DVD if you have same BR disks, etc…

    • Yep. Plan to cull a few uninteresting/doubled ones as I clean up the collection 👍

  • If you're not attached to the DVD cases themselves, you could condense down your collection using these and display them upright in a clear container

  • Secret cabinet that comes out of the wall, like they have with weapons on action films.

Not actually, but that'd be cool.

  • +3

Lot of kids happy to give up ownership and possesions and move to a rental economy perpetually paying corporations to use their services.

The weird thing is they're proud of it and trying to shame people who value owning physical objects.

    Take a step back guys.

To answer OP, check out people's posts on Instagram for ideas. There's a lot of solutions. Copy what people do for books.

Ideas like creating recessed shelves in the walls looks really nice
