Great if you need to borrow a van or ute. At $100, it will be free for a day.

But, as a long-term owner/host with multiple cars on the platform, I have to say that Car Next Door has been an absolute nightmare for both owners and borrowers since they rebranded to Uber CarShare in November. I would not currently rely on them for your holiday, for example.

NOTE: Sign-up requires a credit check.

Anyone interested in signing up as a car share owner should check-out the Car Sharers Australia group on Facebook.

    • What kind of nightmares

      • +8

Car theft + vandalism, support tickets taking a week to a month to receive a response, the new app is extremely buggy (need to log into the app every time, doesn't provide accurate location of car, swap between owner and borrower mode randomly, swaps between light and dark mode randomly, website/app becomes unreachable regularly, etc, etc), councils threatening owners with fines, obstacles nominating borrowers for fines, etc.

Prior to these issues, the Car Next Door platform was great. It was still a start-up with a bunch of wrinkles that needed ironing out, but overall it was a positive experience for the vast majority of people, hence I put multiple vehicles on the platform. I'm optimistic Uber Carshare will be better than Car Next Door was… eventually. But not for months, at least.

        • How do they handle car theft or vandalism? Does Uber Carshare provide their own insurances?

          • +6

@uk3000: Uber provides a "mutual", which is like insurance, but isn't exactly insurance nor is it regulated to the same degree. You're putting some trust in them.

That being said, they are typically pretty good. If the car is lost, I've heard that they pay a fair "market value" in compensation. I've had to make lots of claims and they've all worked out in the end so far (though it can be stressful dealing with the long response times).

I've heard some horror stories though. Borrowers who called up to report the engine light is on, got told to wait for roadside assistance, didn't want to wait so continued to drive (for a long time), engine blows, car written off, owner stuck with the bill because it was a "maintenance issue", despite the T&C's saying that borrowers are not to drive with the engine light on.

            • @besttraveltech: Interesting, thanks for your insight. I've been contemplating becoming an owner/host, still not sure if it's worth the hassle.

              • +1

@uk3000: If you've got a spare car that you aren't worried about having some wear and tear, it might be worth looking into.

If you have a car you care about, or if it would take extra effort (e.g. to buy another vehicle) I'd suggest holding off. A year ago, I would've been hyping you up for it.

        • +1

Not surprising to me that Uber's offshored service is a nightmare

      • +4

Yup, totally agree with the besttraveltech's comment.

We hired a car when we were in Sydney. Car wouldn't start, had to swap to 2 different cars in 4 days, 2nd car wasn't returned even though it allowed me to book it.

Cars are not in great or clean condition the 3 times we booked the cars.

Customer service were sub-par but we managed to get compensation and to top it off, they charged me for the coupon code in which I disputed and got the charge reversed.

    • +1

I used a $50 coupon recently to hire a van to help move house, worked out really well, only paid like $25 for the day!

    • Thanks for the review. Was going to sign up, now a hard pass base on this comments. What do you think of popcar? Booked next week with the free $180 credit promo.

      • +1

I've never used popcar, but I can't imagine it having the same problems. I think the tradeoff with popcar is that it's a bit more expensive, there is less variety, and there aren't as many around.

Personally, I'd try popcar if I need that car when I booked it.

I'd opt for Uber Carshare if I want to spend a day at the beach on the weekend and want the cheapest car, nearest to me, and don't mind too much if I run into obstacles because I'm not in a rush.

        • that is not true. Popcar is WAY cheaper for a long distance trip.

Popcar rates includes fuel for 200km. after that 40c per km. I usually book their corolla for $59 all inclusive.

Ubershare is base price + 40c per km.

if you travel 200km, it will add $80 to your trip.

          • +1

@fomal: It definitely depends on your use case.

Uber Carshare's per kilometre rate varies from about 30c to 50c, from memory. Most people also don't drive 200km. So if you're paying $25/day for a car, driving yourself, the kids, and carload to the beach 10km to the beach and back, the distance may cost you <$10.

There are also multiple Uber Carshare cars within a few blocks (other than mine). The nearest other car share provide is a few kilometres away.

If you have a popcar within a block, you're driving from Sydney to the Central Coast for a week, by all means, popcar is a better bet.

I rarely use share cars as a borrower, but if I did, I'd personally take advantage of all these promotions at the moment and get free trips on all them. LMAO.

      • I have used Popcar twice due to this promo (after formerly using Car Next Door - hesitant to use it under Uber's control).

I've found it to be a pretty seamless experience in Melbourne - just that they don't have enough cars around yet so I had to travel a bit to get one. However it was worth it for the free ride!

      • Used pop car in the last 2 weeks using the 180 promo code. For me has been great - I use goget and flexicar too. It's cheaper than those 2 and similar experience. The only thing I'm not keen on is only being able to lock/unlock using the app. Have used the customer service once - answered in Australia and got my issue sorted. Do recommend.

    • which car share platform would you recommend? thinking of putting up my jeep

      • The other two carshare platforms are DriveMate and Turo. There's also Camplify, which you might be able to put your jeep on if it's set-up for camping. I can't vouch for any of them as I haven't used them.

  • +1

This is a nightmare of an app, where do you put in the code after logging in? Dark mode causes literally everything to go dark, can’t see a thing

    • Right at the end before you pay/finalise your booking

      • -1

Thanks will revoke the neg upon successful booking and using the discount. Horrendous experience for ID verification. Buttons weren’t clicking, tried different browsers on mobile. iPhone 12 Pro.

        • +1

All works fine, revoking neg. It’s a very glitchy horrible sign up process but worth the credit

          • +1

@Mr Bargain Hunter: Saw your comment earlier asking how to revoke neg. Click "votes" at the top and then "Revoke"

    • re dark/light mode, you just need to switch screens. I was confused at first too, but not a huge deal.

    ONERENT23 for $150 off

    • first tiem user only?

      • yes "For $150 off your first rental¹, simply enter code ONERENT23 and book your trip before 31 January 2023."

    • Invalid or expired

  • What happens if the car gets damaged after I "return" the keys?
This seems a bit dodgy in that there is no one to receive the returned car so it seems you can be asked to pay for damage which is not your fault.

Also it says the distance charge includes fuel? Does the car come with a fuel card?

    • +3

So you take before and after photos from 9 different angles, this is part of the borrowing process, you upload the photos.

So the price you pay is for the car and the tolls and km charge is separate. They have a gps tracker for this. I bought fuel and receipt is uploaded via the app and gets reimbursed as credit.

    • That would be the same problem for any car-share scheme (goget, flexicar etc)

  • +1

Where do you enter the code?

    • when you make the booking

  • +2

As a hirer, i’ve had no issues with car next door / uber car share. I would recommend to choose your car wisely (don’t just take the cheapest available, you’ll be disappointed!) and accept that a car is a vehicle to get you around - it’s not your dream vehicle. Chances are it’s going to be a little dirty, you get over it!

Only thing to watch out for is car prices can change from what you initially see in the app. Ie some hirers apply a weekend surcharge. You see it in your booking, but it’s not clear in the app when searching for vehicles.

Roadside assist is included (RAVC, NRMA, RACT etc) which is a godsend. You can get the number via the chat in the app.

I do recommend taking out an additional car rental excess insurance, and check the terms that it covers car club or similar. I got a screw in a tire, this is the renters responsibility so i had to replace with a new tire. My excess insurance covered it, so no stress.

    • Which car rental insurance did you use?

      • +1

I actually have 2 (stupid, didn’t research properly at the beginning, and needed campervan hire which was excluded from the first).

        First one: https://carinsurent.com/
These guys seem like a small operator based out of UK. They have a specific “car club” policy, and paid out on the tire replacement with no issues - though oddly the reimbursement was via paypal. I provided photos of the damage, invoice for new tire, and repaid in full.

        Second one: https://www.rentalcarprotection.com.au/
This looks like a much more comprehensive policy, and includes options for cars, campervans, travelling on unsealed roads, and covers all car hire (car share and traditional car rental). Having said all that, i’ve not had to claim with them - so can’t “recommend” as such.

Both cost in the range +- $200 depending on options.

        • With all this stuff to consider, i may as well hire a car from a normal company with excess waiver…

          • @Serapis: It's your money… and unless your credit card includes rental car excess insurance, then a separate excess insurance policy is the smart way. Typical excess waiver from regular car hire company is about $15/day last time I checked!

        • Thanks for this, just checked the prices for 1 day rental and it’s about twice the Premium Cover on the Carshare app ($15). Do you still recommend getting a third party or do you reckon the premium cover is enough?

First time booking with them, voucher code worked. Note there’s a $150 deposit for first time renters.

          • +1

@joe900joe: Ultimately it depends on your usage, and where else you would get “value” from your insurance. I don’t have a car, and have had a 3 x 2-week car hires in the past 6 months. Having an additional insurance means you can take the basic (mandatory) $2000 excess. If you’re only hiring a few times a year, then taking the car share company excess reduction is probably better value.
            …each to their own!

    • +1

Chances are it’s going to be a little dirty, you get over it!

Dirty cars shouldn't be allowed on the app

      1. You have to pay membership fee
      2. Not available in certain area
      3. This is free $100
    • Uglier user interface

  • Im so glad the other commentors are also dissatisfied with uber car share. I have not enjoyed the amount of risk the owner and borrower have to take. Any problem they charge your credit card. Made me lose all trust in the platform. (profanity) uber car share !

  • How does this compare with goget?

    • GoGet are company owned and maintained cars you hire by the out from various on street locations. Not every where yet though.
CarNextDoor (taken over by Uber) are cars owned privately (eg your neighbour) that are hired out by the hour.
I have used both (many cars/vans for both are near me).
GoGet wins by miles for me. Clean, quality vehicles and a good app/platform. Love their vans and a perfect spare car for our house. If you can, sign up for a business account - the sweet spot, no monthly fees and reasonable hourly rates.

  • I've used the service twice (once when it was Car Next Door and once recently as Uber Carshare). Worked well, no issues.

Just allow plenty of time in your trip for taking all the required photos.
The distances shown from your location to the car also seems to be 'as the crow flies'. Keep this in mind if you plan to walk to pick up the car!

    • The need to worry and document the condition is one of the reasons I switched to GoGet cars - much less stress

  • Used a van in Melbourne a few times, all went very smoothly.

Moved to Cairns and have just bought a 2008 Auto Ford Focus in reasonable nick to put on the road for rental as a test case scenario with thoughts of having 5 or 6 on the road if it works out.

Suitable cars and realistic prices are hard to find, particularly up here, got this for $2k and will need to spend $700 to get it up and running.

Looking at listing options, it seems Uber want a 40% cut on the daily rental unless you subscribe at $119 a month then it drops to 25%.

  • Why tf do i have this error: We couldn't approve your application. Please check your email for more details.

  • dont forget the referrals !!

  • does anyone know if the credits include km's ?

    • yeah i was wondering this too…

    • +1

I can’t speak for this specific deal, but I used a different promo code a few weeks back and it covered kms (trip cost me $0).

    • +2

Used this promo yesterday and it did cover the kms.

  • What's the best way to transport 10-12 people?

  • I have a full unrestricted license, excellent credit score and a perfect driving record and they rejected my application to sign up for an account and use the platform. They verified my ID, I made sure all details match. What a waste of time. When I contacted them they told me they don’t have insight as to why my application was rejected but I’m now banned permanently from their platform due to the system blocking me and they can’t even explain what the issue is. Great…

  • Are you able to use this code if you have used the Car Next Door service in the past? I can see on my Uber carshare account (that migrated from CND) that my past trip from 2021 is listed there.

    • I don't think so, unfortunately.
