Where should I buy an iPad - Australia or USA

Hi.
I have a few questions - thanks very much in advance.
1. Anyone got any idea where I can get the best deal on an iPad?
2. I'm heading to America tomorrow, so should I buy it there? (Warranty issues?)
3. Or is there any retailer selling them for a good price here?
4. Can I claim it as duty free when I go through customs in departures?

Cheers

    1. Probably Kogan. Failling that, you should try using the search function on Ozbargain!

    2. From this, iPad warranty has global coverage, but it does not apply to Verizon iPads.

    3. Kogan.

    4. See http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1468991

  • Hi spartacus

    1. There is an excellent deal available right now. This is the cheapest price I've ever seen for this particular model.

    2. There should not be any warranty issues as Apple's warranty is global.

    3. There are occasional specials but the average price is generally higher than US - except for the deal above.

    4. Provided the retailer gives you a tax invoice. The deal above is from a retailer that apparently doesn't provide tax invoices unless you really bug them (from Whirlpool forums). Other gray importers like Kogan won't also give you a tax invoice as their imports are exempt from GST.

      Point.3.
Considering iPad price on Apple US website is BEFORE tax. Depending on where you buy it, it will attract some tax. For example, in LAX area, it's 8.xx% tax, but if you go a bit further, it's like 10%.

in US, there is NO tourist tax refund.

So i'd like to say, buy in AUS - because you can (1) claim tourist refund (2) claim Tax Deduction 2013 (3) has an AUST adapter/plug (just optional) (4)you can throw in heaps of movies which makes your trip more enjoyable.

Go back to POINT 2. he's heading to AMERICA TOMO guys, dont suggest Kogan or ONLINE. not valid advice.

but i think, you can buy it from KOGAN - and u dont need to travel anywhere to get it.

  • …i will not go to US just to buy a IPAD….why would I do that - I wonder!

  • Wow - Thanks for the great advice. I will check out the links and your suggestions and tell you how I go.

  • If you can buy one from a tax-free state in the US, do so. If not, just import with Kogan.

  • Just an update. Bought the iPad new at JB-HiFi in a bundle deal after comparing to Big W. Getting tax back was a breeze going through customs.
