Help with smart lock compatibility with standard door

Hi Guys,

I have two doors that I am keen on replacing the deadbolt to a smart one.

Front door and and garage door (door that gives access to the house from the garage).

Both doors are 35mm thick and basic doors.

Will the LOCKLY secure plus deadbolt version fit?

Plan is to remove the deadbolt and add the LOCKLY. Then maybe remove and install a new door handle (below the deadbolt) as well as both are very old.

How easy are these smart locks to install? I not very skilled with handyman tasks but can give this a try!

Or should I get a locksmith to install both?

Thanks.

You don't need a locksmith, these are essentially plug and play. These locks should fit a 35mm to 45mm thick door.

  • Leave the dead lock as it is and change the standard lock (or other way around, depend on which has a handle) https://www.yalehome.com/au/en/products/keyless-digital-dead… (example only, I prefer Samsung)

    Read the installation manual first.

Since you are asking these questions here, you better get it installed by someone else.

    • Interesting. So leave the top one (dead bolt) and change the handle with something compatible like a digital latch.

So does that mean, the current deadbolt is redundant and will not be used at all and will just stay there?

      • Well, your door got two holes and generic electronic lock needs only one.
Or you could get something like this Samsung SHP-DH537, hoping your two pre-exciting holes going to match with them (check the installation guide).
And typical electronic locks don't have handles, it's good to have one in some cases.

Installation usually plug and play, but tiny issue can cause headaches.

Please beware the Yale Keyless Connected works with an existing 60mm backset rim lock … which you don't appear to have.

        • Thanks for the heads up!

    • This would be inconvenient to open close the door. but up to op.

I can see why you want a replacement, that door hardware has seen better days. Holy cow what a mess.

I'd be seeking a refund from whoever painted that as well.

Lockset installed by a drunk with one short leg, then painted by a drunk with a glass eye.

      • I'm not even sure you would get the door jamb hardware off without a fight. Those screws have been absolutely shredded. That bung legged drunk must have had the drill speed and torque set to max and drilled without a pilot hole.

        • Ah now I know why all my screws have been absolutely shredded, thanks for the tip ;)

@boomramada: We are talking about door hardware you know? 😉

      • Lol

    • The built quality of the house is questionable no doubt. I got it around a decade ago and have had issues ever since. One thing after another but have fixed most of it calling in the professionals.

The front door needs to be pushed for the deadbolt to lock properly. It’s a pain and hence need to align the stike plate and upgrade the locks and the handle.

So a locksmith can do all of this? Or do I need to get a carpenter as well?

I would say give it a go. if you cant , then revert to old lock and seek help from an lock installer. Usually its a simple job.

    • I would say give it a go

Really? Have you looked at the garage door pictures? If that's a past DIY job then lord knows what a smart lock install would look like.

      • Not a DIY.
That was done by the tradies that built the house.

        • Thanks for the clarification. That is really poor workmanship. Definitely done at 4:55pm on a Friday.

          • @Muzeeb: You mean 11:55am on Friday, no tardies work till 5pm :)

            • @boomramada: My bad. And I can't edit it now 🤬. Also, what's a tardie? A tradie that didn't know that mini skirt Monday was a joke?

Import a Wyze Lock Bolt (Fingerprint Keyless Entry Door Lock) from the US via Amazon.com https://www.amazon.com/Fingerprint-Bluetooth-Replacement-Wea… and use this in place of your deadbolt. The passage set may be retained. Lots of review and installation videos online. Somwhat better value than LOCKLY

    • Hey, thanks. This looks pretty affordable. Around $120 delivered to Australia. Sounds like a great deal as I am looking to buy two!

The Yale/Lockwood digital deadlocks are designed to fit into the same hole as the old manual deadlock. So buy one from Bunnings, take off your old deadlock and see if the new one fits. If it doesn't just take it back to Bunnings for a refund.

But, those digital deadlocks need the door to and striker plate to be aligned, so as you said, you'll need a handy man to get things lined up first. We have to hold ours closed while the motor pushes the bolt through, otherwise it misses the the bolt hole and plays an error sound.

    • Thank you. Will get the door sorted first.

  • Jump on YouTube and search for The Lockpicking Lawyer.
What you have may be better than a smart lock.

  • Hey, I noticed a price drop in Bunnings. The Lemaar smart lock was $319, now $260. 18% lower.
