Samsung 990 Pro Rapid Deterioration

News link: https://www.neowin.net/news/samsung-refusing-to-acknowledge-…

Anyone else who purchasd this SSD recently having this issue? Some people have the drive health falling too fast. Just want to check how widespread it is and whether I should bother opening mine to test or just return to Samsung.

Sounds like Samsung made a dodgy batch/batches.
I would guess that they tried to cut costs by using new (cheaper) components.

The fact that Samsung has hesitated to acknowledge this problem and have not disclosed which batches have been affected does not inspire confidence.

If it is easy to return and get a refund, then I would recommend you do that and save yourself the hassle of (potentially) submitting an RMA claim in a few weeks time.

If you cannot refund it or if you don't mind dealing with RMA claims, then you might as well give it a try, but be prepared to return it to RMA for a replacement as soon as it noticeably acts up.

  • My son has one so after reading the linked article I had him check his and it's still at 100%. So not all are faulty.

    • Thank you, is he running it as an OS or game drive?

        OS and Game drive

        • Cheers thats good to know

        • Can you do me a favor and tell me whats the production date of your SSD? Should be on sticker of the 990 Pro box.

            @kehuehue: Production Date / 2022 11 09

            • @Bruceflix: Same as mine, cheers :)

            • @Bruceflix: 2022 11 08 here and it has deteriorated to 99% in about a month of ownership. Perhaps one day difference in batch production date made all the difference? Mine is used as OS drive in a laptop.

              • @findingbargains: I'll check it tomorrow and see. What are you using to get the drive statistics?

                • @Bruceflix: I used crystal diskmark. Couldn't use samsung magician to run SMART diagnostics because there is no supported samsung 990 pro nvme driver available for Windows (you'd think they'd have one available before releasing the product).

  • my guess is that it's just a software issue and that your drive will last for the listed TBW value as no additional data is being written to the flash.

Samsung investigating issues with 990 Pro SSDs

Update on Samsung SSD Reliability: "and there is a chance that the 990 Pro issue is just improper reporting of endurance loss".

My brand new 2TB 990 PRO lost 1% in two weeks of light use (OS in business laptop)

In meantime, 4 years old 970 PRO still reports 100%….

    • Whats your production date for the SSD?

Im not gonna pop mine in until Samsung releases a fix.

      • No idea mate, it takes a bit effort to disassemble my laptop to find out, sorry

        • Should be on the box sticker if you still have it lying around

          • +1

@kehuehue: Good to know, yes, it's on the box - production date 2022 11 09

    • Supposedly stops the deterioration, but not bring back drive to full health. Will update and post when im back from vacation, since my drive is new and untested.

      • I believe they should refund or exchange those who already bought the drive and experienced premature deterioration before the fix was released. Let's hope they don't make it difficult.
