Is Shopping at ASOS No Longer Worthwhile?

Check out these recent reviews: https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/asos
Sizing off, quality off, impossible to communicate with support, don't pay refunds.

They are similar to the bad experience I'm currently having.
One order description was misleading about fibre content.
Another order comically oversized. Item has been removed from website which is unusual even for recently sold out items.

Communicating with support is completely impossible. They don't read what you write, yet constantly repeat back what you say, or paste irrelevant form answers. Only option they give me is to return, but I'm afraid they won't actually refund.

You read those reviews and have issues yourself and your asking if its worth it?

    • +2

Reviews are often skewed negative, because people would rather vent about bad experiences than rave about decent ones. It's not unreasonable to ask a group of savvy shoppers with no obvious bias what their experiences have been like.

Where else am I going to find a 3 piece suit in leopard print Fluoro hi vis yellow though

  • Sounds like they’ve gone majorly downhill. I got jeans from them a decade ago, but pointless if you have a levis clearance outlet near you

There’s a big difference between ASOS branded items and non-ASOS items on the website (e.g. Tommy Hilfiger). You can easily filter out brands you don’t wanna see in your search results (filter > brands > all > uncheck ASOS DESIGN).

I do find that ASOS branded items run on the big side, so tend to order 1-2 sizes smaller than what I’d normally wear.

Some items also have reviews from previous buyers, who might recommend ordering a size up or down, etc. They also comment on garment quality in reviews.

Free delivery and free returns (via an Australia Post store) are huge pluses for shopping on ASOS.

I find that ASOS stocks niche sizes and cuts (skinny or larger, less common sizes) that other sites like The Iconic have never stocked.

They also easily have the largest catalogue of items on a western based e-store (looking at you, Shein).

Regarding refunds, I’ve never had a refund rejected or not fulfilled. The fastest and safest thing to do if you have an issue with an item would be return it. Do not contact support to organise the refund for you. Follow the return process and you will get your refund every time. As soon as you contact support, you’re introducing the possibility of human error. ASOS reasons for returns are extremely broad, so there is no reason why they wouldn’t accept your return and refund you. I often get a notification of refund once my return package has been accepted by Australia Post or it has arrived at their Australian returns warehouse. They do not need to receive your return in Europe for them to refund you…

    • may i ask: how recently did you last successfully return something?

      • +1

        Sure, December 2022.

        • thank you.

do you have any idea why an item would disapear off the website if it was only recently for sale?
usually sold out items are still archived and they just say 'sold out'. but this one returns like a 404 page.

@bargain huntress: great question, you’re right they don’t normally remove listings, even if its out of stock.

have you clicked on the item link from your asos order confirmation email?

            • @elloraymond: yes. and from my account on the website. it goes to a page that says 'OOPS!! Sorry! The page you are looking for was not found.'

          • +1

@bargain huntress: you could also try accessing the item via the asos app? asos app > my account > my orders > tap on order in question > tap on item in question

            • @elloraymond: i installed and tried - it says "OOPS Nothing to see here."

              • +1

@bargain huntress: very strange! does it allow you are to create a return for the item via the website?

                • @elloraymond: yes, well i think so. what's stopping me is that i can't order any more in a smaller size, and also the reviewers reporting no refunds.

                  • +1

@bargain huntress: that’s no good. but it sounds like returning the item should be fine.

what could be an issue is reordering it another size, especially if the listing is gone.

on the plastic bag that the item came in, should be a few product codes, on top or below the barcode. you can search asos.com for those codes to try and bring up the listing.

also have you tried searching for the item on asos.com, by typing in the exact brand and product name? (e.g.: “asos skinny jeans grey”)?

                    • @elloraymond: I tried searching the numbers and exact name, no luck. It's weird.

I bought the plus listing. They do have the regular listing still up.
I wish i could work out if a 24 is comically oversized, if an 18 would fit or be too small. What do you think?

                      • +1

@bargain huntress: If you’re tossing up between sizes, I would definitely order both the sizes (if not more sizes), since you can just return them all anyway!
Ordering more than one size of each item (especially ASOS branded) is a huge time saver for me.

                        • @elloraymond: So i got the 18s delivered express to make sure they arrived before the 28 day return window on the 24s closed. They are also too big for me LOL but not insanely so - they are 'oversized'. Im a size 22 in tops which means this oversized design from ASOS' brand must be…

                          …an 18 is a 24 or a 22 oversized, a 24 is a 30 or a 28 oversized…

they must be 2 to 3 sizes larger than what they say. Wow. Sounds like you are right.

So i guess i will return the 24s using the automated system and hope for the best! If they dont refund me ill be out a few hundred though so not fun.

They were made in Turkey. Really well made. If asos brand stuff usually comes from there i guess they wont be restocking for a while. Those poor people.

FWIW I've bought a bunch of stuff from ASOS, both their own brand and other brands, and have had no issues with returns. Sizing is always variable with clothing so I accept that as a risk when shopping online. I've returned a number of items to ASOS because the sizing wasn't what I expected, or the material didn't feel nice. I haven't had any issues over the past few years.

That doesn't mean nobody has issues with them; with such personal items like clothing there's bound to be issues with sizing and quality here and there. That said, you have to be aware of the limitations of websites like ProductReview.

They mainly attract complaints because only people who have had bad experiences will bother searching for a website and go through the hassle of signing up and writing a review. People who bought items from ASOS, received them and they were exactly what they expected would just wear the clothes and not bother searching for a website to write a comment saying "I ordered some clothes and they look like the photos so I'm happy".

Every business will have a certain percentage of dissatisfied customers. The more popular a company is, the more orders they will fulfil, and the greater the number of dissatisfied customers there will be. What matters is the percentage of dissatisfied customers; unfortunately you'd have to make an educated guess based on published sales figures.

If ProductReview was a reliable source, nobody should ever shop at an Apple Store as they apparently have terrible service.

    • Thank you. There must be a solution to the negativity bias in reviews. Maybe they should be asking and reminding people to review on external sites.

Haven’t bought anything in awhile. Tried to recently but gave up because they have thousands of items and styles that I can’t decide on it bother reading about in detail. Choice overload.

The free shipping has gone up to $120 spend now. Used to be $50.

i returned something in dec, got refund in jan, no problems

I gave up on them when I realised the range of brands available to Australia is relatively small (compared t the UK). I'm not really interested in Asos-branded clothing.

    • For what its worth ASOS brand does seem to be high in quality. Just makes sure you order 2 sizes too small! Maybe 1, 2 and 3 sizes too small.

This is also making me reconsider shopping with them - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/784136
