Lawn Mower

Need a new lawnmower - want a good quality one that will last at least 10 years. Any recommendations of brands? Was online looking at forums and Honda seemed like the best brand, whereas people are like Victor has gone down in value. The grass at our place doesn't really take up too much space and I don't know anything about lawnmower functions so need something that will work smoothly. Thanks!

If there really isn't much grass, why not get a push mower? Will last a lot longer than 10 years, almost no maintenance if you can stand the blades getting a bit dull, no petrol hassles, …

And pretty easy to pick up something cheap on gumtree or ebay when I last looked (pay $50 for a new one at Bunnings).

A push mower is really hard work unless you use it regularly and not let the lawn get too long. (the longer it is, the harder it is to mow)

      • I've used a few push mowers with fairly long grass… depends how much hard work you're up for and how big your lawn is, I guess :-)

        • I'm not that tough :P

Just keep an eye out for a bargain on spinach, moocher! ;)

Chorus: [singing] He's Popeye the Sailor Man. He's Popeye the Sailor Man. He's strong to the finich cause he eats his spinach, he's Popeye the sailor man.

  • I bought the Kmart one a few months ago to mow my small little patch.
Has had 4 runs out of it before winter set in.

Its sitting there collecting dust during winter, and I hope it will start next month when the weather
    start to get warmer.

  • @ilovelollies - if you're looking for something grunty that will last more than 10 years and 'future-proof' in case you upsize, a Masport with a good engine (such as Briggs and Straton) should do the job. It's not as expensive as a full Honda (body and engine). If I'm not mistaken, Masport also make models with Honda engines, but they are more expensive than the models Briggs and Straton engines.

However, if the area is quite small, perhaps even an electric one will do.

  • Thanks for all the comments and help! I was recommended a superswift petrol mulcher machine. Tried going online but couldn't find anything about the superswift brand…any experiences?

  • Electric Bosch Rotak on Amazon UK?

  • I have always loved my Flymo electric (hover mower). It is really light, you just plug it in and it works and cuts perfectly - so much easier than all the stuffing around with a petrol mower. Only issue is having to drag the cord around but you get used to it.

  • If you had a lot of lawn, then a higher quality unit may be a better bet. But frankly with a small lawn, even a cheaper unit should last, as long as you store it away undercover, you drain the tank in winter and make sure the deck is clean after each mow, and you replace the spark plug and air filter every 4 years.

A local pensioner supplied my current unit, for $50 5 years ago, all he has to do with many units he gets from people throwing them out, is to replace/clean the air filter, clean the carby from junk that builds up from stale fuel, a new spark plug and in most cases thats it. (plus sometimes new blades)

Now if you were a mowing contractor, using the unit for a few hours each day, then a Honda would be the way to go. But I guess you aren't.

2 Victa's or 3 Kmart specials would probably be as cheap as 1 Honda.

  • I really appreciate for your consciousness about maintenance about your outdoor space. It is one of the best way to maintain your deck or living area to look more attractive for spending most of the free time with your family members and guests.
