Citibank Premier Card Complimentary International Travel Insurance

I was looking at the t&Cs for the complimentary travel insurance and can't seem to find an answer so hoping someone here may know.

It says as long as you purchase the overseas flight on your credit card, you are eligible for the complimentary insurance. Does that mean I would be covered for the whole trip by just purchasing the initial outbound flight from Australia on my card?

Or would I have to purchase any other flights I take on that trip including the inbound trip back to Australia on my card?

If anyone has experience here and can confirm, would appreciate it.

Obvs, a Return would probably cost less.

You need to consider you full itinerary including any domestic flight p.23 prior to boarding your outbound flight.

    • I still find it a bit ambiguous. It just says overseas travel ticket. But doesn't mention I have to purchase any additional flights I take within that same trip on the card to still be eligible for cover.

      • This is why combank is good for travel insurance. Just activate and covered.

        • Which Commbank card would you recommend for this?

        • I'm in the unfortunate position of needing to make a claim with Cover More, the issuer of the Commbank complimentary travel insurance policy, and it looks like it'll take 2 MONTHS just for them to read my claim - and if other online reviews are reliable, it's possible that this could blow out to 4-6 months before I get a final resolution. So whilst it might be simple to activate, the claims process is definitely less than ideal!

" before leaving Australia the cardholder obtains their overseas travel ticket (but not taxes or airport or travel agent charges) by one or a combination of the following methods:"

    "overseas travel ticket means either:
    • a one way ticket to an overseas destination; or
    • a ticket to an overseas destination and return to Australia."

    Cover under all sections ends:
c] if you have a one way overseas travel ticket, when the first of the following occurs:
    • when you return to your home; or
    • thirty one (31) consecutive days from the departure

    • Ye I have a one way ticket at the moment to Singapore. I assume that I'll just be covered until I return to Aus (my trip is less than 31 days) even if I take a flight from Singapore to say Vietnam and use a different card to pay. Guess I'll find out for sure if I need to make a claim.

Some travel insurance policies (especially credit card policies) are very poor value - because of the terms and exclusions. You can't assume that just because your bank offers international travel cover on your credit card that it is good enough to rely on. You have to read the detail of the policy. For example, a few years ago, I read a travel policy which excluded any claim where illicit drugs or alcohol were a factor in the incident causing the claim - - not your use of drugs or alcohol, but anybody's. So if the driver who put you in hospital was drunk, you were not covered.

    • Yes I agree. Need to do due diligence to see what's covered, excess, limits, for anything you think you may likely need to claim.

  • I once had a trip to Asia with 8 sectors. I lost my camera and claimed a lousy 250 after they encouraged me to put in a claim…. I had to submit evidence of paying for each sector on my card, one i couldn't find they queried and told me i couldn't claim, but once i located evidence and had satisfied all conditions i got $50 in the mail as there was a $200 own risk…. so not worth claiming for little things, and despite encouraging me to claim it was a crap process.

    • So if you had just booked just one of your flights on a different card, Citibank wouldn't have approved the claim?
