Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G warranty options - refund $750 or exchange for Galaxy S22

I have had my S20 FE 5G in for repairs with Samsung. They have been unable to fix my phone and have offered me two options. They will either refund me the $750 original purchase price, or exchange for a 128gb Galaxy S22.

I am inclined to take the refund and look for another phone, as I do use expandable memory as storage for audio books. I have also found it to be a good backup option when phones have died in the past. Am I overlooking something here that would make the exchange the better option?

Which option would you recommend I take?

  • How much memory did you have on your S20?
    Was it enough?
Do you mind the Samsung OS or hate it?
Did you have other phones in mind that you can buy with $750 that is better than the S22?
When do you next plan to purchase a new phone?
A new S22 current RRP is $1,249. So they are offering you $750 cash or a $1,249 phone. I am ok with 128Gb. I don't mind Samsung. I back up my phone to my desktop. I would take the phone. Your choices may lead to a different outcome.

    • I currently use around 260gb on my sd card.

I don't mind the Samsung OS.

I don't have any other phones in mind, and I had not planned to upgrade anytime soon. Aside from my issue, I found the phone to suit me perfectly.

If you want to keep the whole 260GB of data on your phone then the S22 will not suit you as only 128Gb and no expandable storage (unless you want to work with cloud storage).

How much space on your SD card? 512GB or 1TB? Perhaps ask Samsung if you can get the S22 with more storage and pay for the extra storage?

      • Samsung is releasing their new phones in a couple of days so expect their old phones to drop in price.

  • explain the situation to them and suggest swap to 256gb and you pay the difference?

  • If you have a backup phone, I would take the refund and wait for something good to come up. $750 will likely get you a S22 256gb.

If you want a phone with a SD slot, your options are slim. My recommendation is the Xperia 5

the base S22 had a fairly woeful battery for the processor power and screen power drain.

    take the money,
Drop it on an S23+ pre-order

How much is the s22 selling for on gumtree?

  • What happened to your phone that made it require repairs?

    • OTG function ceased to work and replacing the port didn't fix it.

  • How is this even a question ? Exchange it.

    • I'm asking as the S22 doesn't quite suit me. It has less storage due to the lack of expandable memory, as well as a smaller battery. Moving from an SD card will be a big jump, hence why I'm sounding out advice from Ozbargain.

      • There are no flagships with expandable memory anymore, batteries are getting smaller as well, unfortunately not much you can do about it.

  • refund - S22 does not have sd card reader so you will not be able to use your existing sd card.

  • Can get the s22 to $698.60 on the store by using Samsung Members 30% off code and by giving them a $1 trade in (can obtain this by saying that your phone is cracked) and don't return the trade in (they will charge you $1 to your credit card). So total is $699.60. Take the $750 refund instead.

    • Thanks, I didn't realise how much the value had dropped. I think I'm erring towards the refund.
I'm waiting for Samsung to call me back again, that will probably take a couple of days.

  • Exchange for S22 and sell it for more than $750..

why not just get the $750 cash, buy s22 for $699.60 (see my previous comment), then sell it for more money?

      • how can i buy s22 128gb for 699? i need to buy one. Thx

        • Codes are expired. Can't buy it for that price anymore.

          • @AwesomeAndrew: Thank you. What would be the best offer for s22 128gb ? Thx

  • Negotiate with them to exchange for a S23 (any models). Profit :)

  • THIS IS OZBARGAIN!

    Take refund!
    Buy refurb S20 FE 5g for $350-400

    Profit!!

If the S20 suits you, just get another one.

(Similar, I have S20 FE 5g with screen burn in, but haven't got the time to let them "assess it for software issues/wipe it"and then send it back to samsung for 3-4 weeks before they resolve it! Need expandable memory so only flagship option now is Xperia with Sd or a mid ranger with a lesser camera).

Last time I called Samsung they used their remote control and activated backup to cloud which filled my google accounts 15gb with 15gb of photos I had on sd and then stopped my e-mail coming through, muppets!

    • That's what I was thinking of doing. I do genuinely like the phone and nothing seems to fill its niche.

Do you have any recommendations for where to buy a refurb?

  • Does GSMarena has any relevancy to Australia?
