Laptop Recommendations for Home Use - Budget < $1k

Hi!

Looking to replace my 5 year old Mac with a laptop under $1k.

I saw Lenovo are offering 10% off for new members and shopback are offering a further 15%.

Alternatively, I found but haven't had much experience with refurbs.

Any recommendations as to which laptop to get? It's mainly for movies, browsing the web, and life admin. Storage, portability and longevity are key.

I personally like Huawei matebooks. there also Xaimo range as well

  • If you go onto Lenovo chat, they are usually able to offer more discount. Worked for me twice before but YMMV.

    • Any recommendations in terms of model?

Depends on your top priority. If to watch movies, something with a dedicated GPU is usually good but then they become heavy (usually around 2.5kg) so it is a tradeoff with portability. Have a read of this for a few ideas of the types of specs to look for: https://www.vssmonitoring.com/best-laptop-for-watching-movie…

The Nitro mentioned below has good specs but only has 512Gb storage space so if you have a lot of movies you would need to carry around an external SSD or add an extra drive. I bought Legion 5s so would be outside your budget unless you can find an older model on sale.

It would also be good if you could view the display in store to make sure you are happy with the colour reproduction, etc. IPS is generally better for watching movies, photo editing, etc for increased viewing angle and colour accuracy.

The Lenovo website usually has the latest CPUs and GPUs. Generally older models in retail stores but for that reason also cheaper.

  • Spring for the M1 MacBook Air if you liked MacOS.

    • Wait until spring?

      • Spring the bit of extra money above 1k.

  • So you don't want MacOS anymore?

I went from macbook air to a lenovo duet 5 and I like it. Although I personally would have gotten the Duet 3 if it was out during that time. Battery life is so good and I can just charge it with my phone cable as well.

  • i saw these being advertised for $899 last week : https://www.mwave.com.au/product/fujitsu-lifebook-u7311-133-…
