Colour Laser Printer Recommendation for Aftermarket Ink - Double Sided and Wireless (Wi-Fi)

Hey,

I have a Brother 3230CDW and have been buying ink from www.inkstation.com.au. Brother released a firmware update last year and now aftermarket ink doesn't work on it. Printer gives some error. I have not bothered to buy genuine ink to see if that fixes the problem as there's a chance that ink goes to waste.

However, after speaking with the customer support person Sylvia, I was unable to come to a conclusion as to what type of printer I should purchase that would work relatively reliably with aftermarket ink.

I want:

  • Colour laser printer
  • Wireless (WIFI)
  • double sided
  • cheap aftermarket ink

Could anyone give suggestions?

Do you want an ink printer or a laser printer? Laser printers don't use ink, they use toner :)

  • hi mate, try the genuine cartridge as others have reported in other posts some solutions
    * cell button battery dies (in cartridge) and no longer triggers something on the printer
    * try genuine cartridge - even an empty one and this might trigger the printer to work
    * let inkstation know as they have a guarantee that the aftermarket cartridge will work

    • I agree on the last point. OP should try contacting Ink Station as they have very good customer service. If your set is disabled, Im pretty sure they are willing to send another set to try.

I have a Brother DCP-L3510CDW that also got pushed out a firmware update that was causing issues with aftermarket toners. Specifically when the whole printer was turned off then on it would reject the toner.

The trick was to remove the little chip on each toner cartridge, and underneath there was a tiny battery, remove the battery for 10 seconds and then put the battery back in (making sure that it is the same polarity that it came out) and this would reset the chips on the toner and it would be fine until the whole machine was turned off / blackout. Quite a pain in the ass to do and it needs to be done with all of the cartridges at the same time but it did work and is how i'm currently getting away with the printer.

This may or may not work with your printer, do it at your own risk. There are a few posts if you search on google about the same (quite irritating) issue.

I had this too. I’ve moved to the “Aussie toner” cartridges and they seem better. It’s been 4 months and they’re still working

      • Nice thanks for the tip! I'll try them next time.

Kinda getting sick of Brother but don't know a good alternative, our last Brother bricked itself after a firmware update and now this one updates itself and I can't stop it :/

  • your best bet imo is brother 3745 or 3750 - i have it and it's great

If you print things frequently, you can also look for ecotank.

    • I'm glad you used the word "frequently" as they do clog if not used frequently.

  • You can try another brand of after market ink.

I got a Brother 3745. I accidentally updated the firmware and it disabled my after market ink from Aussie Toner. After that, I bought a set from Ink Station and it worked.

You can always try another seller as sometimes they use different types of chips and make sure to turn off firmware updates.

  • Brother MFC-L3770CDW, definitely turn off the automatic firmware updates.

i got a HP MFP M477 for $150 on FB marketplace been solid for like 2 years

  • A bit pricey ($600) but the Kyocera 5526CDW fits all your criteria - my work uses one.

    • Does it support non-OEM ink?

      • I started with Inkhub for colour toner only, and OEM for black, but eventually switched over to all Inkhub with no big issues.

There is also a mode to ignore empty colour toner and substitute black instead.
