"Businesses caught using those items can be fined $1849 and individuals face a fine of $370."

I've stocked up for a couple of decades because I can't stand the paper ones at Maccas and 7-Eleven.
Will be using them illegally I suppose behind closed curtains at home.
So will I be fined if I BYO when I get an iced latte at Maccas or a Slurpee at 7-Eleven?

Who will be policing this? Will Dan Andrews hire Protective Straw Officers (PSOs)

    • Made from ground up oyster shells

That would affect the many people with allergies to crustaceans and seafood though, wouldn't it?

I hope the people handing those out in stores clearly notify people of what they contain.

      • Oyster is not a shell fish or crustacean, it is a chitosan.

“There is no evidence that chitosan would cause any reaction for someone with a seafood allergy."

        • People with shellfish allergies are allergic to oysters.

          https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/shellfish-all…

Shellfish allergy is an atypical response by the body's immune system to proteins in certain marine animals. Marine animals in the shellfish category include crustaceans and mollusks. Examples are shrimp, crabs, lobster, squid, oysters, scallops and snails.

Something useful like plastic straws are banned, but 90% of the tons of useless plastic junk on this/aliexpress site is completely ok

  • In the grand scheme of things, people who dislike the policy makers tend to physically move away, over time we have people who shares similar views congregating. It is a self-adjusting process. The world has been re-organising itself for the past few years. It'd be interesting to see what Victoria becomes. Apparently it's historically rather rebellious, not sure what happened.

  • When are they going to ban their stupid election signs that they nail onto trees, and then leave them there until they end up as litter everywhere?

So when are they banning single use coffee cups? Surely everyone has at least one keep cup by now ;)

I've never used a keep cup more than once, it is unhygienic.

  • Just get a few extra straws. You can get through like 1/2 a Slurpee before the straw gets soggy. Then use the new one and bobs your uncle.

That's what I've been doing. Getting 3 straws each time. Killing 3 times the number of trees.

  • Stopped getting bubble tea because of their paper straws, just doesn't feel right

    • You can still buy plastic straws on ebay, so you can BYO… It's just a hassle though.
