What is your current phone capacity and how full is it?

      What a stupid question

      This is a good question.

I currently have a 256gb which is 50% full, it would definitely rule out a 1tb version for me, and even 512gb, don't think i would need it

I'm confused. Such conflicting advise advice. Is it a good question or a stupid question?

        • Good question! This is the key information we need to help OP

Hi mate, I am on iphoneX 256Gb and it at 95% capacity. I will make a jump this year to Android as iPhone 14 is so boring now.

I had my iPhone for 5 years and most of my storage being occupied by videos and photos. So with basic math, I think I would use 50GB or more per year giving image size become bigger and bigger.

But Would 1TB will be slowing down significant as capacity build up ? thats my concern.

      • I will make a jump this year to Android as iPhone 14 is so boring now.

What do you mean by 'boring'?

(Not a dig, by the way. Your answer is probably pertinent here. For example, to my mind, it's a phone; it's supposed to be boring. That you think boring is bad probably means that you use your phone for more interesting purposes than I do, and those purposes would probably use/benefit from extra storage space.)

Do you plan on transferring those over and keeping them around on your new phone? If so, you definitely don't want the 256GB option. 512GB sounds like it might be a reasonable choice.

But Would 1TB will be slowing down significant as capacity build up ? thats my concern.

I'm not sure what you mean by this either. Typically your phone takes a performance hit when your percentage of free space drops to below 10-20% (chiefly since there is less spare room to cache things so it has to start being conservative). But that will be true of any storage size, not just 1TB. In fact having the 1TB makes it less likely that you'd run out of free space, so you'd be better off if anything. Unless you mean something like "Does having 1TB of storage space make it slower for the phone to find things even if I've only used a tiny fraction of it", in which case: no, it doesn't. To the extent there is overhead associated with that (and I doubt there even is), it wouldn't be noticeable.

The tradeoff is in the pricing. If you're not going to use anywhere near 1TB of phone storage over the lifetime that you have it, then $100 (or however much Samsung wants from you for the difference) is money that could be better spent.

I remember when I jump from iphone 6 plus ( skip all the 7, 8 ) to iPhone X. The excitement was just up in the air. The form factor, speed, 2 camera, glass back and steel body. Holding the phone was just awesome. Now I love my iPhoneX but it is reaching its life and expecting something bring me same feeling but iPhone14 pro is just a shame ( it very similar to my X if you know what I mean, dynamic island is just gimmick plus all bad review of poor battery ) I can't justify buying something $2K+ without sentiment of excitement.

In term of storage, I want to transfer them all over. I do think 512GB seems a reasonable option as well.

I am not Android user but I do feel with Apple device, the storage filled up, especially nearly full. The phone do seem slowing down ( I swear not just me, all my friends and family do feel it too, may be just very objectively observation but remember Apple scandal with low capacity battery couple year back )

I think i might just get 512 for future proofing.

          Thanks mate

Yeah that's actually a thing. It's due to a number of factors (of which, for Apple especially, the infamous planned obsolescence definitely plays a part), including caching. Part of what makes a phone feel fast and responsive is that if there's room available, it will keep things around in cache so that they're quickly accessible for next time. When the phone storage gets massively filled (90%+), apps aren't able to do this, or have to start deleting other apps' cache to fit their own cache in (which then means that those other apps need to shuffle things around again, perhaps deleting other cached items first, and it all becomes a noticeably slow, laggy mess).

            All g, bro.

          • @ozgameboy: Mate buy a fold 4. Incredible device and wow factor for a couple of years.

I’m going to order an ultra 23, I have a iPhone 13 PM, but want to leap into android. I had the Z flip3 and was an incredible device. Used it for work all day battery no problems. Terrible for gaming as intense games murder the battery but everything else was bliss. Split screen. Smooth UI. Slick operation with the folding mechanism.
Impressed so much that I’m keen for a perm upgrade to android and want change my daily driver. Torn between the latest and great ultra, or the fold4.
I just can’t get over how nice they are.

I feel the right answer has to be 1tb

256gb will be absolutely fine for your type of usage.
I got a Samsung S21 Ultra 256gb… though I am starting to run out of space which I use for a bunch of photos and videos. I clear them out and copy them to a portable hard drive every so often and that works well.

I use Google Photo as backup via the cloud and functions well when I want to search for particular items.

    • Good call. I think with upgrade memory promotion plus 12GB RAM. I will just get the 512GB version. Best of both world. Value + Spec wise.

  • +1

Get 512GB in th eprice of 256GB as per the current pre-order offer from Samsung :)

  • +5

256GB model only has 8GB RAM, the 512GB model gets a bump to 12GB.

Unfortunately the 1TB model doesn't get 16GB of RAM and is stuck on 12GB.

I would get the 512GB model.

    • +2

Thanks, just noticed that. 512 is best option then

  • What’s the cost difference? Can a micro SD be found for cheaper than the cost difference of the base device?

    • +3

microSD hasn't been supported for a few years now…

      • +1

        Oh wow I didn’t know.

That was the only reason I’d ever have gone not Apple…

          Man’s… are you lost? 🤫😂

          • +2

@BusMan247: No? I just didn’t know something, is that a crime?

The last time I bought a phone I was weighing up between a Samsung because of the slot, and the iPhone which I bought. In that time Samsung have removed the slot on phones. However, I bought a Samsung tablet in 2022 and it had a slot. My assumption was that all their phones still had slots too.

My sincerest apologies for being incorrect.

For future reference, if you believe someone is lost, you offer them a map, you don’t just point and laugh.

    • I know it bad for environment mate but my phone served me well. I want to make its retirement early and well. Not selling, not dumping, just keeping it.

512gb has 12gb ram (compared to 8gb in the 256gb). Also 512gb can be had for 256gb price if you pre-order.

    • Thanks mate. Definitely good choice with 512 over 256.

  • Started with the Note 8 that had only 64gb of storage space which certainly was not enough well dont know why Samsung bothered, so decided to go straight to 512g on my Note 9 mobile upgrade and never looked back,..so then did the same on my Note 10 and Note 20, well I certainly took use of the 512gb space downloading large torrent files some 4k quality, good thing using a mobile to download 24/7 well leaving a mobile running 24/7 is certainly a lot cheaper in electricity costs then running my highend gaming pc 24/7, actually managed to crack the screen on my Note 9 in one corner so decided too keep her and use as a second mobile to download more torrents twice as fast having 2x 512gb phones, some torrents were bigger then 512gb so downloaded each series in sequentual and then transfered out of mobile the completed series to make space for next series to download, biggest complete series i think was 2TB i manged to download on my mobiles and i manged that on 4G cellular data during beginning of pandemic 2020, when Optus stuffed up with there free 25gb (pandemic offer) of add-on data were one could keep adding as many 25gb free add-ons as ones desire umm might have reached upto 2.9 TB of data built up in my Optus mobile plan

1 TB would be yummy 😋

I hope you don't talk the way you write…

      • I do and yes 1 TB would be yummy yummy lolz one cant be too nimble these days, Mr Kimble 👍😁🤣

      • i talk like this but spend 20 mins trying to write a readable sentence then use the edit button a bazillion times to keep condensing it

        i blame a combination of ADHD/ASD/trauma

cannot understand the above but sounds like something i'd do 🙃

downloading torrents using SymTorrent on my $400 Nokia 5800 XM imported from Hong Kong way back early 2009, just not enough space for all those linux iso's 🙈

      • 🤣 @John Kimble

  • Now that the phone is out in peoples hands it's been revealed that Samsungs OneUI version of Android that runs on these phones occupies a massive 60GB of storage due to all the bloatware it ships with. For comparison, I just setup a Surface Pro 9 for someone and Windows 11 with Office 365 installed takes up 40.7GB

  • I want 12gb ram so I voted for 512gb. Currently with the pre-order a few retailers are also offering the free storage upgrade from 256gb to 512 gb
