Australia Post Untrack Parcel

Every now and then I receive online orders through Australia Post "untracked parcel", they are low value items, so never thought twice about them.

The label does have a QR code and an Article ID. Received another such parcel today, so I entered the ID to track and it does show "Onboard for delivery" and "Delivered" status.

So it's untracked in transit, but still scanned at the end, I guess for proof of delivery.

Presumably untracked parcels are much cheaper to send, so it's perfect for low value items. Is it only for business/high volume senders? I have asked about it at office office, they said the cheapest parcel starts at $9, which is on par with a small satchel.

  • Was it addressed to your home or a parcel locker?

      Normal street address.

Untracked parcels that are delivered to a parcel locker have to have the QR code and an Article ID sticker affixed so that the addressee can be notified that it is available to collect. Unsure why yours was updated if it was sent to your house address.

There is a user on here that works for AusPost that should be able to assist with your query as to cost of sending untracked parcels.

I've found in the past Australia Post was still able to track an "untracked" parcel which was missing. I think they track everything, but just charge you extra if you ask for a tracking number.

    • True, especially when they already have the infrastructure and processes setup, it's more efficient to scan everything than trying to exclude certain articles.

A case of pay more, get more updates. And also insurance, regular parcel are automatically covered for up to $100. Can safely assume untracked parcel has zero coverage.

      • The untracked parcels are eligible for compensation too, but you need to get a receipt when you lodge them.

My understanding is the tracking used to be “special” and handled differently to the normal parcels, but Auspost have updated their systems in the last few years to allow all parcels to be ‘tracked’, but they still want to charge extra for signature on delivery.

        • That's good to know. For a long time I thought regular parcels are not covered, paid extra for express just for insurance. :D

  • I didn't know there was such a thing as an untracked parcel. I only know of untracked letters.
Some sellers will stick fake tracking on untracked letters to deter theifs. Was you parcel under 20mm thick?

    • This one slightly over 2cm, but I have received much thicker ones with similar untracked label.

  • If it is a sticker that says "untracked parcel/item", this is generally put on at the final sorting center/delivery center for internal use. This is not purchasable.

  • The label looks like this, not actual label.

  • From my personal experience in the past,

Those untracked parcels (with a tracking number, that cannot be tracked on auspost website), they could be be tracked by calling their phone number ( like when robot says, "We are just checking on your details now, if your tracking number ends with XXX press X), this way buyer could find out latest scans of those items (because auspost do actually scan them), that's the reason why on chat or phone to an agent they can see updates on those untracked packages.

That being said Its just a lot easier to track parcels with parcelsapp.com or packageradar.com or 17track.net. All track those sort of scans too. I personally prefer parcelsapp.com.
