Grabbed one of these last year, and my daughter and I had a heap of fun with it.

    • Great to hear @chriso1!

Sorry, what is the age range of your daughter? Just curious to see if mine (5yo) would fine this fun or if it would be too complicated. Thanks!

She was 8 when we got it. The python programmer is pretty intuitive but at 5 she'd need to be a decent reader I think.

Good deal. Also +1 for core electronics and all their online resources they churn out to help makers

    • Thanks Macca!

    • Core Electronics are great, they well deserve our support for all the effort and online resources they provide.

  • Ordered one to play around with, Thanks!

    • Awesome, we'll send you tracking soon!

  • Ordered ! Can’t wait to try it out ! 👍🏻

  • If you buy this and the GlowBit rainbow wheel is that all you would need? Or what else?

    • +1

That's all you need. But take a look at the https://microbit.org/projects/
If the project requires any extra sensors or a second one, it will tell you. None of the beginner projects require anything extra except household items (e.g. sticky tape), a couple of intermediate projects use a second microbit. They almost all say "battery pack (optional)" but one of those comes in this set (battery not included).

I see that there's an expansion with a bunch of sensors for $89 https://core-electronics.com.au/piicodev-starter-kit-for-mic… but Microbit has a lot of sensors on-board. Depends on what you want to do with it. You don't need the extra sensors.

      • They almost all say "battery pack (optional)" but one of those comes in this set (battery not included).

FYI It says it comes with 2x AAA batteries.

Seems a good deal but, if you can, add "Express PayPal" option to your cart. The #1 reason I give up on a purchase like this is having to fill out the order form and then using PayPal as a payment option, which is going to give you all these details.

The benefit of these payment options is to reduce checkout friction to almost 0.

    • We'll check that out

These guys are fantastic - highly recommend ordering from them.

    • Cheers & thanks :)

  • Is there a compatible relay as Arduino relays are rated for 5v, or will microbit 3V output still control a 5V relay or cuase damage?

    • +4

There are 3.3 v Arduinos, so it's the same problem as this: https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/213051/how-d…

It won't generally cause damage since it's under current. But if the thing you were trying to do fails to occur since you had insufficient current, then that could be bad. For example, you might be designing a fish feeder. It's not got enough current, so it doesn't always feed the fish, you go on vacation and they starve to death. https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/65824/can-el…

      • Thanks. Sounds like a suitable rated SSR will do the trick. But yes you bring up a good point about what could happen driving a 5v relay with 3v.

Thanks OP. Will be great for my nephew.

Would you consider local pick up as I'm about 4mins from your warehouse?

    Cheers
    Dan

    • +1

Cool stuff I bought one for my nephew as well :)

    • +1

Pickups are no worries - you'll need to order online and then choose pickup during checkout. Use an address nearby to get shown that option.

We'll then send you an email once it is ready for pick up - it may take a little bit as we action orders in groups :)

      • Unreal. Thanks heaps :)

  • Adding a filter to show items in stock only could be a great thing to consider :)
I was looking at the Pi section and it was difficult to clearly see what was available.

    • PiLife - hopefully, things return to normal sometime in 2023. It won't be for a few months yet though - the silicon wafer shortage seems to be the main hurt point :|

  • Does this come with instructions on what can be done?

  • Do you have any face to face classes or activities?

My 10yo son and I live just around the corner from you in Adamstown.

    My kid: "Oh Cool!"

    Then back to Roblox……

    • +2

This is so true. Anything physical, toys, lego, cards, kits my son gets has about a max of 5 minutes attention. They go on for weeks or more wanting some toy, once they get it, they forget it right away.
He can go more than 5 hrs straight on Roblox. Yeah I know, Bad Dad I am.
He would rather have Robux, if we do not control his cash he has from birthdays etc, it would all of been converted to Robux,
Actually my daughter is the same. Roblox…… Minecraft is dead to them…

Actually how can a toy compete with Roblox. Toys are dead, stop wasting money on them. As an old guy, I still do not like to buy digital items, I need a box or physical item.
Kids do not see this anymore, probably a good thing. Hording digital items takes no space (hey I have horded thousands of Kindle books that I have no intention to read, takes no space, imaging if we had he physical book, who needs and has space for 2000 books), by the time they are adults they cannot afford a house, so they do not have space to store their stuff.
I am getting on in age and I have a big hoard of stuff, what the hell am I going to do with all that stuff I have amassed.

      • +2

        This sounds like my house.
        You have my sympathies.

Roblox = crack cocaine for kids.

"Oh yay, a new toy… NOW can I play Roblox?".

      • +1

You are not alone @fred1000. My kids will be more than happy to be in front of the computer than doing physical activities. So I set schedule to turn of the wifi for couple of hours a day. No one in the house touch the device during this time (including me and wife). There will be time when they can set the wifi router back, but that will be my future problem :D

        • Sounds good, but do your kids know you set the schedule or you just tell them the Internet is broken again.

          • @fredk1000: They are still too young to know it at this moment. So I'm enjoying this time while it last :D

  • +2

Love Core Electronics. Any chance I get to buy from them I do. Thanks for staying consistent.

    • Thanks JSONBourne!

  • I use my microbit to open and close a window depending on the temperature in the room. Handy in winter in Tasmania when running a wood heater to be help regulate temperature. I use the led screen to show the temperature, and the buttons to set the designated temperature that the microbit will try to maintain by use of open/close of the window.

Too late to get good price for this. Want to get one for my kids to force them to do someting "useful" rather than just play roblox, minecraft and watching youtube.
