Recommendation for Laptop - Budget ~ $500

My old laptop just died. Now I'm searching for a replacement to be used mostly for uni work.

I have computer at work. I also use desktop at home. But I do need another one when I go to uni. Because of those reasons, I don't want to spend too much on something that I only use a max of 10 hours a week. I'm at the moment considering a budget of $500. Only need something that is passable for uni.

Things to consider:

  • Light weight
  • Main use is Microsoft office, ppt etc.
  • Web browsing (when I do research at uni, so something that can handle multiple tabs opening on chrome)
  • Decent battery life. What's the point of light weight when I need to bring the charger around otherwise? But do correct me if I'm wrong in terms of my reasoning for a decent battery life.
  • 0 gaming required. I do my gaming on my desktop
  • Don't need decent screen as I watch movies on my TV.

I have considered Chromebooks as they are light weight with good battery life. Duet 2-1 series kind of appeal to me as I can detach the keyboard making it even lighter. But I've never used Microsoft office online so I don't know how different it is compared to the normal ones. Also I don't know how to compare the specs of Chromebook with comparable laptops. Chromebooks seem to be more expensive at same RAM and storage.

I'm also not sure if I should consider refurbished as I've read mixed reviews on battery life. Apparently it's a coin toss on what you would get. But if you think battery life isn't that important, then do please give me your reasoning and persuade me otherwise. I don't mind refurbished otherwise. I've bought a lot of refurbished products before and they have been satisfactory and of great value.

If refurbished is good, would a refurbished Microsoft surface be good fit for my propose? Light weight, and Microsoft office capable. And cheap because of being refurbished?

My budget right now sits at $500 but I don't mind spending a few extra hundred. But I would be really reluctant to go beyond $700-$800 unless duly justified.

As you are asking for expert opinion, I'll provide mine.

Your requirements are so moderate in terms of needed computer power. I would go for a refurbished Dell Latitude 7xxx series.

For $500 you'll get at least:
    i5 7th gen CPU
    256 GB SSD
8 (or maybe even 16 GB) RAM

    Latitudes are rock-solid business-class, 7-series is lightweight, with 13", 14" and 15" screen sizes.

You may have concerns re battery life, but if the refurb is only average, a new one off eBay will only be $30-$40 or so. (Free utility from Nirsoft, BatteryInfoView, gives great information about your laptop battery, including how much of possible capacity it charges, how many expected hours to recharge, or it will last, etc.)

A refurb Microsoft Surface Book may be OK (although worse valuse than equiv Dell, IMO), but avoid Surface Pros (resolution too high - hence tiny text - issues over 9 generations with crappy WiFi, no user-serviceable/upgradable parts, touch screen… annoying, etc.)

Let us know how you go.

    • Right pretty smart on getting a new battery myself. Why didn't I think of that lol. Think I will go for a refurbished one then. Cheers.

Is this site legit? Is this where I should go to look for refurbished dell laptops?

As above, the Dell Latitude 7xxx series are great machines for the money.

An alternative would be something like a Refurb ThinkPad T580. Here's the specs of one on eBay now for $650 ($616 with Plus)

    i7 8th Gen CPU
    512gb SSD
    16GB RAM
    15.6" FHD

Awesome build quality and super well established lineage.

edit: missed the requirement of "lightweight"
I'd still recommend a ThinkPad but maybe an X1 Carbon or a T480s

Thx I will look them up

    I've used www.australiancomputertraders.com.au for refurbs.

My only concern re a ThinkPad X1 Carbon, is that they are 'trendy' and popular. Maybe 'thrashed' a little - like a Subaru WRX. LOL.

Lightweight, good battery, under $500. Definitely a refurb, ie used ex govt/corporate from a seller with a 12-month warranty like ACT.
The business models will be tougher too.

As above, Dell Latitude 7390 or 7490 is great. You want 8th gen Intel (or later) Just be sure to get a FHD model, not 768p.

  • so i narrowed down to these laptops from australiancomputertraders.

    price cpu ram storage extra
    499 i5 8365 8 512
    550 i5 8350 8 256 2 in 1
    559 i5 8350 16 256
    599 i7 8665 8 256

I cant really decide at the moment which is better. i have no preference on screen size. 13.3 or 14 is close enough.

I am not sure if i should choose the cheapest one at $499. The extra storage seemed redundant in my case. Is the 2in1 feature worth the extra $50? is the 16gb ram worth the extra $60? how much better is i7 compared to i5, does it justify the extra $100?

    Any suggestions?

  • It depends on your need.
2 in 1: do you need a touch screen?
16Gb RAM: more RAM is better in some ways. But we can also upgrade when needed with cheaper price every day. But depend if we usually open multi windows/run multi tasks
i7 vs i5: could be processing performance. but i5 should be fine in most casual cases.
If I was you, I would go with cheapest option 499 should satisfy all my requirements and under the budget 500.

  • Do consider ThinkPad T series or X1 Carbon as well as these are Lenovo's equivalent to Dell Latitude 7xxx. For example this ThinkPad T480s 24GB RAM 256GB SSD for $499

    https://www.australiancomputertraders.com.au/lenovo-thinkpad…

HP's equivalent would be EliteBook 840 G5, if you are looking for 14inch Intel 8th gen CPU laptops.
