From COVID to Pizza, we've got you covered.

  • Not sure I’d trust this over a probe for food

    • +8

Two different things though - this is surface temp whereas the probe is internal

    • Not many probes will do a 500C pizza oven?

    • +2

If you're cooking your food to 500c, remind me not to accept any invites to dinner :)

      • Hey but its still better than not cooking ( talking about meat )

  • Ive got the inkbird bbq probe for xmas and cooked perfect lamb roast via the app very happy with the products .

(and all of a sudden inkbird eBay rep wonders why they get 400x make-an-offer requests in 5 minutes for this item :) )

Would you fire this at the BBQ grill plate or the BBQ lid? Internal probe seems more useful when BBQing

Depends what you want to measure. I just run round the house firing the laser.

But yeah, a probe in food and one mounted in the oven/bbq is probably what most people need. This might be good for places too hot for a probe (pizza oven?)

      Grill plate.

These are useful for pizza stones, finding cold/hot spots in your home, taking a forehead temperature reading, playing games with a cat or catdog.

Use to check temperature of the grill plate, so you know it’s hot enough to sear.

Another good use is for using on pans. You don’t want to drop in food if it’s not hot enough and just soaks up the oil.

      • +2

Water on pan. Test. Or spit.

        • +1

That just says that you’re above 100°C, little else.

It’s good to know when you’re at 200°C or above, especially at the barbecue if you’re trying to sear.

This thing is potentially only $15… if there’s anyone reading this and not sure, just get it. Over its entire lifetime, you will get $15 of use from it. There are worse things to spend money on.

@wormarts: I think they mean one drop of water, it will sizzle/dance = hot oil/pan

            • @TEER3X: Yes, I get that. What I was trying to say is that ‘hot’ sometimes may not be hot enough. When I sear on my barbecue, I do it at a higher temperature than is required for water to sizzle/dance.

Hence the preference to use a thermo gun like this to make sure I’m at over 200°C.

          • @wormarts: If your water droplet dances on the pan. Then it's over 190. It's a called the drop dancing effect.

          • +2

            @wormarts: FYI they rejected a $20 offer, so it won't get to $15 :)
