JB Hi-Fi Refusing to Do Anything about PS5 Stick Drift Controller

So I purchased a PS5 controller from JB Hi-Fi about 14 months ago and it started to get stick drift. I went in store and the manager stated that the controller was not covered after one year when I referred to ACL. I got handed this brochure which stated that controllers are classified as accessories and only get 12 months. I think they determine stick drift as wear and tear as the brochure says.

I would argue this would be a mechanical fault due to Sony choosing poor parts. Did I just get unlucky with the manager or do I have a case? Anyone else been in this issue? I will plan to go to a different store and see what they say.

  • You can take it up with Sony too…

Lodge an ACL complaint, we have to bend over to them - refuding to even look at it for assessment under ACL is a breach

  • It is wear and tear unfortunately. Could try to argue with Sony.

    2 extra months. How lucky.

Move on, get a new one bruz.

Bottom right of the brochure, just write to their ACL warranty claims officer before escalating any further.

14 months for an original controller seems like a pretty short time. Most of my controllers have been used for at least 400-500 hours and are still perfectly fine other than some cosmetic wear and tear.

  • Buy a new one and wait for EB games trade in deal for controllers to trade in the drafting one.

  • I have a XSX controller with stick drift and a stuck bumper. The Xbox website says it's still under warranty even though it's over 2 years old, but it offers no option to post it in for repair. I got it through Telstra but I doubt Telstra would replace it after so much time. You might need to actually phone Sony.

Go straight to Sony and cut out the time sapping middle man.

I understand that "it's my consumer right blah blah"
But if you want anything to actually happen you'll have to contact Sony directly, JBHIFI don't make money off dealing with warranty claims so will put minimal effort into rectifying the issue.

  • This is why they have the Dualsense Edge.
Sony created a problem and are selling you the solution :)
Amazon have stock for anyone looking: https://www.amazon.com.au/DualSense-Edge-Wireless-Controller…

Dualsense Edge still doesn’t have Hall effect sensor for the analog sticks so will still be susceptible to drift.
You’d think at that price that they would use them

This is true but you can replace the sticks instead of the controller. Quite an expensive setback nevertheless.

  • Thanks guys I will take it up with sony and see what happens. really disappointing spending $100 on a "next gen" controller only for it to be shitting itself after 400 hours of gaming. Will update the results

  • Take it to Sony. I don't know how good Sony is with honouring ACL for this, but JB pulled a similar on me with a Switch Joy-con with stick drift that was 13 months old.

They guy acknowledged that it was a common defect but still said since it's past manufacturer's warranty if I wanted it repaired through JB I would have to pay, and to get my rights under ACL I would either have to request the matter be escalated to the manager to go to Nintendo.

I didn't want to waste my time arguing about my rights with a manager or whatever, so I sent it in to Nintendo. JB can get stuffed.

  • Worked at JB for 10 years in the past.

Send an email through the website. Escalate until it is dealt with. 14 months is not long enough for a controller unless there is physical damage. Reasonable wear and tear is also protected under ACL.

You can also make an ACL complaint through consumer protection as discussed. They will follow it up.

Generally JB will just cover items under a certain value and items over $200 receive another "complementary" year+ warranty to try to appease "reasonable time frames" under ACL. End of the day… you are covered by ACL regardless.

Controllers are not disposable items. Good luck!

I always enjoy the folks that reply to these posts acting like they know consumer law and manufacturer warranties mean anything in Australia. It doesn't and you don't. So quiet please. Looking at you "@Yummy".
