Zomato’s Dead in Australia

Zomato has been switched off in Australia. It used to be my go-to restaurant/cafe rating app. I remember when it took over Urbanspoon…

I had a list of places I wanted to try saved in there. Looks like they’re gone now. Oh well.

Does anyone have an alternative, reliable rating app they can suggest? It is just Google (stars & reviews) now?

      What a stupid irrelevant message.

Zomato was brilliant to find new places to try. Had nothing to do with delivery apps like doordash or deliveroo.

He has been negged cause the post is about Zomato who did not offer any food delivery services - so the whole post is completely irrelevant to the OP's topic.

They offered dine-in booking services and rating services.

Haha, that will teach me to post at a stupid time before tea. Oops

Because it's completely irrelevant to OP's post ?

There is a huge difference between making a mistake and being a thick adult in todays society.. Once again, are you perfect like jesus?

I don't think you understand what zomato and before it, Urbanspoon, actually was.

Urbanspoon was fabulous in its day and my go to for balanced restaurant reviews. Then it was bought over and it all went downhill and irrelevant…..

Yelp? TripAdvisor? Those are for recommendation rather than rating/reviews though. I guess Google is still the best alternative.

10 years ago we had Eatability & Urbanspoon. One got acquired by Optus and the other one by Zomato. Now we have none.

Sounds like a good market opportunity for ozbargain to step in!

I guess there is an opportunity for a new player to come in and create something.

      • Only one would wonder why Zomato quit if the opportunity was financial

Maybe the government could start one..

        • The opportunity may be more as a fun side project that can be sold later on; rather than something that will provide huge financial benefits at the start itself.

      OzFoodies?

All review/rating websites are artificial these days. All the smart ones game the system. Basically only good for weeding out the places with practically all bad reviews to avoid.

  • What was before Zomato? I remember it evolved from something, maybe Urbanspoon? I had the app on my phone but rarely use it, just check Google these days.

    • Was it Quandoo?

      Urbanspoon became zomato.

    • Eataly?

I just use google now. Zomato removed all my bookmarks a while ago in a stupid update and I never bothered again. Google obviously isn't as good as you can't bookmark but zomato got to a point where it was useless, menus out of date especially.

You can save any place to a custom list on Google maps.

      • Thanks. I didn't know that.

moved to a new area and it's really annoying that it has gone. Trip Advisor is lucky to have one review for many local restaurants.

Found myself reverting back to google after being an avid duckduckgo user for a while, but there's clearly some rubbish reviews in there (both good and bad).

I'm going to do it the old school way, try them all and see which ones I like.

I still use duck duck go but if I do a search with DDG that I don't like I just add the "!g" operator to the search to force a Google search. I notice a lot of the time the search results are exactly the same, but also a lot of the time they are completely different. You get a sense after a while if Google will give you different more personalised results.

I was never sure what Zomato even was.

      at least Zambrero has food

      • 'food' is a very loose term to use for that place.

        • +1

Yeah it's kind of flavourless mush. But at least it can sustain you if you consume it.

Ironically the restaurants that strictly follow the health code and have the cleanest establishments got lower reviews these last few years. "Made me wear a mask, one star!"

      • Possibly why they teach reading and comprehension in most schools after you've learned to put the star shaped block in the star shaped hole.

  • Surely they are not going to close and delete thousands of reviews?

They have very good SEO and come up in a prominent position in the reviews section of google.

That would take years to replicate.

Will it all just disappear or could someone buy rights to the reviews and accounts etc?

  • Never used them in Oz, but did so all the time while in Delhi. And they delivered

  • @Baniya - yes, agree with you. Rather disappointed with all these Developers.
Cant really remember the sequence, there was UrbanSpoon, Zomato, Dimmi. Didnt they also used to give points to redeem for food?

Also there is now EatClub, theFork… Some is only Apps on mobile, not good for Seniors or anyone with less-than-perfect eyesight or fat fingers!

    Never heard of it.

  • This is a big shame, it was my go to app for finding restaurants and reading reviews.
    Very sad.
