if any form of advertising claims "disrupting the industry" or "taking the *** by storm" is usually full of shit. no offence. but good luck.

  • +1

Not much variety of items to choose from.

  • +2

Nothing of genuine interest. These cheaper sets can be bought for $25 anyway. The fancy sets that might be of interest aren't there.

    • +2

I doubt they can afford to offer fancy sets since people would just keep the set and cancel their sub.

      • It could be prevented, but yes needs managing.

  • Seems like a bad deal. Then best value senario would be paying 3 months of $60 membership for 160, add ~$20 postage to borrow 2 sets and dont return them. For 180 you end up with 2 second hand sets with RRP of 200 each.

I d rather shop around for deals and buy the 2 sets brand new at $300 ish.

  • I have no idea why one would chose MYSTERY SET or THE MINI MAKER plans. They do not make any sense.

  • +2

They need put sets like millennium falcon 75192 orr Hogwarts Castle 71043 to make this services attractive.

And to protect themselves may be charge a holding deposit in Paypal?

    • Large sets would inevitably lose pieces over time through the turnarounds. You could get replacement pieces free from Lego, but that would take the set out of service, needing more sets (capital) to ensure there are full sets to rent out, and manual labour to check and prep with each rental.

With large sets for adults, they are largely bought to build & display - so paying $60 a mth to have a used rental display piece on a shelf seems expensive given the Lego itself holds value (so ur better of buying ur own). It feels like this subscription is more suited for parents where the enjoyment (for the kids) is in the building process, and the variety is of value so the bias towards smaller sets is there - probably something like a $100~200 set that is too expensive to buy outright all the time, and premium enough to give kids enjoyment.

Not for me, I just want to build it and take a pics of me building it…..

May be a surcharge of XX% on large sets……

This has been tried and failed a number of times before. For the business owner, the time and effort required to clean and sort and verify 1000's of bricks is inordinate to the subscription fee.

The customer rules around piece loss, set mixing and disassembly can only go so far.

But good on the OP/owner for having a crack, I'd love to be proven wrong.

    • Agree stuff like this always fails

    • As much as i would like to say you're wrong. Unfortunately people being people. Specially kids. They would misplace pieces. Break some also. Mix them up.

Loss prevention will be a real hassle. I would like to think anyone getting these subs would baby these things as they put them together to disassembling them and packing them back up. Unfortunately it just won't happen in many cases.

    • +1

Sorry but OP said it's hugely popular and has taken the UK by storm.

      • +1

Just like any business you gotta embelish a little to drum up said business.

      • The big difference is London alone has a population of about 9million and its like 25% the size of Melbourne.
They can mass market 1 single city and already they have higher chances.

Or the fact the UK has a population 2x more then Australia.. Many things just dont take off in Australia just because we dont have enough people in niche markets to make a good return on it.

  • +1

Here an idea to combat customer's losing pieces…. how about about going into Brick borrow store, grab their rented set from a 'locker' bring it to a table/private area within store and build.??

    • I've been to libraries that have this. It's not a bad idea, although still does nothing for the whole brick loss (theft, dropping behind a shelf, etc.) and mixing problem though, so even then this is still generally limited to either Classic (random) and cheaper sets.

You will own nothing and you will be happy

    • Things you own end up owning you

No way this is good value or sustainable. The $25 & $40 plans only send sets worth $10-25 ($8-15 when on Sale). You need to pay shipping (min $12) so just the shipping would just about cover the cost of buying the set. Then sustainability, shipping is not a sustainable option. Posting a set worth ~$15 back and forth is not environmentally friendly neither wouth the cleaning process be.

The bigger sets pricing is way too high, for 1 set a month your looking at around $660 a year (inc shipping) for sets worth $60-150 so again a savy shopper could just about buy and own the amount of sets you get in a year.

More sustainable to give unwanted sets away to a daycare or neighbourhood kids, i dont think people are bining lego after building it.

    My favourite bit:
'Your subscription helps us save the planet. Our mission is to share our love of LEGO® with thousands of Australian homes, so we can save tonnes of LEGO® from landfill.'

Er, where is this tonnes of landfill Lego?

    • +1

I will dumpster dive that landfill of legos. Build me a house out of lego. Muhahaha.

    • Yeah I will grab it for my bricklink store :)

  • Jeez they really will turn anything into a subscription service these days won't they?

  • the UK version is not bad, $26 (AUD) + $9 Shipping and they have sets like the Simpsons House which was around $300 and not worth $500+
