Which Travel Websites Don't Charge an FX Fee?

Hi all,

Have an upcoming overseas leisure travel holiday. To enable my CC Travel Insurance, I need to spend $500 in relation to the holiday.

I've already booked flights. Yet to book car hire, hotels, day tours and activities. Happy to pay and book on any website as usually prices are pretty similar across agoda/booking.com etc etc.

I'm wanting to make an eligible purchase on my CC but not wanting to incur any FX Fees. Do you know of any websites which process payments in AU and hence don't charge an FX Fee?

Thanks in advance
Regards,

Edit: Card is Westpac Credit Card

  • Usually anything you book outside Australia will be in the foreign currency. It's up to your credit card provider as to if there's an FX fee.

With Westpac, it doesn't even have to been a foreign currency, it can even be processed overseas for it to incur the 3%.

You might not be saving that much when you consider that if you were able to pay in AUD, you would be paying the website's rates which could be around 1-2%.

Agoda in my experience always charges in foreign currency.
Booking.com or Wotif sometimes charges AUD but it would have the conversion fee baked in already. You're not escaping either way.

Consider the $15-20 fee (3% of $500+) cheap price for travel insurance.

I believe I have always been charged in AUD by Expedia when prepaying (rather than paying on check-in) for hotels, etc.

You can hopefully stack with one of their usual 10-12% off coupons as well.

The currency is not what matters. What matters is where the payment is processed. You could be charged in AUD and still be charged an Overseas transaction fee by the bank.

I have used hotels.com in the past without incurring FX fees. Just make sure you are in au.hotels.com and don't use a VPN. Make sure you select pay now, rather than at the hotel.

  • Thanks. I'll try booking a night using hotels.com and then one night using Expedia and try my luck

    Cheers
