Opinions on Webcam with Mic and Speaker Vs. Separate Devices

Hi all,

I need a new webcam and mic as they are on the way out. I've done some looking online and struggling to make a decision on best way to go, e.g. all in one product (webcam, mic and speaker) or separate devices (webcam and mic/speaker). What does everyone think and can they recommend anything within a budget max of $300.

What are you planning to do with the devices? Vodeo conferencing for work or creating content?

    • It's just for work video calls and possibly using the speaker for listening to Spotify when not on calls.

  • This is the equivalent of asking if you should buy a 2 door or 4 door car. So vague that nobody can help you here.

If it's just for video calls for work, just get the all in one. Quality is good enough for video calls, and no one really cares as the video and audio is so compressed that it's going to end up bad quality anyways. If you are trying to become a youtuber or other type of content creator, go with the separate camera and mic, as it allows you to position the mic in a better location to get the best audio quality. Also discrete microphones generally have better quality (eg. better frequency response, lower noise level) than integrated ones.

Just use an Android 13 device plugged into USB:

  • If you using Windows, get one with windows hello.

  • Webcam with mic and separate speakers.

I have one of these for work calls- has been used for one on one and group Zoom meetings, teaching and for research data collection involving acting and is clear picture and audio (you can get it cheaper elsewhere, JB was just the first link I found): https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/logitech-c922-pro-stream-…

I also have a blue snowball, but TBH the webcam mic is only a minor drop in quality when it's directional- if you need to pick up multiple voices you'd need a separate mic.

Then get speakers with whatever you have left :)
