Genuine Dyson Battery

It's battery replacement time, our third Dyson, previous two both required battery replacement at some stage, though one was replaced under warranty.

Thinking about getting a generic replacement this time, at less than half the price. Some even claimed double the capacity, doubtful.

Anyway, what's the general consensus on this sort of thing? Usually would prefer original parts, but if not really required, why spend more?

Cheers!

You will be disappointed buying generics, they’re usually worse even if they claim to be better.

Do you have any battery power tools? Have a look into adapters for your brand, they can be a better solution.

    • I bought generic one for V6 and turns out ok. But yah, buy carefully.

    • Interesting concept, never thought such adapter existed. We do have Makita batteries, but they are 18V, I think the Dyson battery is 25V, probably best not to mix them up even if the adapter can adjust to required voltage.

Always go direct to Dyson first for battery problems and see if they’ll offer a free one, even if outside warranty. Most people I know who have tried have succeeded.

Last time I called about a new battery for my old Dyson, they offered me a 25% off code for a new Dyson model

      • Oh wow. Had you ever replaced the old models battery? I know someone who needs an upgrade and 25% off isn’t bad.

    • Good idea, will give them a call and see what they say.

  • I recently did a lot of reading and research on third party batteries. Most of them lie, they state a large capacity, though YouTube tear downs show the capacity is lower. They also looked very poorly made. And a last point, they apparently don't handle the large power draw from the vac, so end up dying fast too.
We ended up buying direct from Dyson.

A “hack” video i saw on social media suggested this option

    • We have Makita 18V system, while it will work, I think the difference in voltage would either under power or screw things up long term.

  • Battery last longer if you not using the full power all the time.

    • Agreed, we always use the low setting, very rarely switch to medium or high, only when try to catch a bug.

Fake batteries off eBay are a waste of time. I’ve bought a few before I learned my lesson. Had a few friends to the same.

They claim to be 4000Ah up to 7000Ah and every single one of them I have pulled apart have 18650 batteries in them with the best having 1800Ah batteries in them.

If these aftermarket ones claim anything above about 2000Ah, they are fake and will not get anywhere near their claimed capacity.

    • Much like fake memory cards, it’s almost impossible for average consumers to tell. The one I found on eBay claims to have 9,000mAh Sony cells, they are counting on majority of buyers are none the wiser, the one or two who found out and complain, the just refund. Overall still good money.

      • No one makes a 9,000mAh 18650, not even Sony.

    • Not all aftermarket are bad, I've encountered one with LG 3000mah cell in it, but obviously it has lower max amp rating compared to the murata/Sony cell Dyson used

I just purchased a generic for my V6, knowing it was not going to be as claimed, but being one-third the price, and my vacuum having lasted 6+ years, I don't want to spend $100+ when it's going to be time to upgrade to a better vacuum when a suitable deal is posted.

      That’s a sensible decision.

      • Oh, and I did purchase a V8 from an OzB deal for $450, which outperformed the V6 by far, with the no-tangle hair comb filter being the big draw, dirt picking up performance being much better, V8 being much quieter… and a new battery. I normally like to go all-or-nothing but the V8 is perfect for price vs performance.

I did look around at a few different vendors and decided for choosing a vendor as linked above, that I felt most comfortable with, specifically with thousands of feedback for this type of battery.

Have a V6 for 7+ years. When the original battery died after 3 years, I bought some generic/compatible ones from eBay. First one lasted a bit more than a year, and the second one lasted for 6 months. Went back to eBay to claim warranty, the seller claimed that I have already used it for more than 6 month, and offered to send me a new one for $20. So I took the bait, and the new battery lasted another 6 months…

So I ended up buying a genuine one directly from Dyson (was on sale for $79). 30 months later it's still going.

    • Battery Capacity: 9500mAh
      For real?

      • I doubt it, but it does last as long as my original Dyson battery when it was fresh and new… I was at the point of charging it after using for a few minutes before I replaced it with this one.

        • Original should have no more than 3600mAh

  • Went with Dyson battery, vacuum performs almost like new again, a bit dear but feels like worth it.

Having bought an Ebay "Dyson" battery I can honestly say don't waste your money, in 6 months you'll be buying a genuine replacement as the fake one will pack itself it.

Edit: I can see you made the right choice :)
