Asus GT-AX6000 Vs Asus RT-AX86U Pro Vs Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Router

Hello,

I'm planning to upgrade my router and due to some issues I'm stuck between these options.
The internet plan is 1Gb.
My place is around 1070 sq ft, 1 floor, 3 rooms.
Sometimes I will need to transfer video files via wifi for around 300GB. Also I will use the wifi for screen mirroring and some IoT products.
I got around 7 internet heavy devices that will connect to the wifi.
I may build a NAS in the future.

I'm considering these routers.

  • ASUS GT-AX6000 $284usd
  • ASUS RT-AX86U PRO $233usd
  • Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Router $233usd

The prices are not much different. Both the Asus products have better signal coverage and better hardware.

Since the UDR is kind of enterprise product so the software did provide more option like VLAN. The reason why I'm hesitant about the UDR is that it only has a Gigabit port for both LAN/WAN and the wifi coverage (UDR + U6 IW) is worse than Asus RT-AX86U PRO (result from the same reviewer, same place, same plan). The UDR only provide AX3000 so the 5GHz only has 2402Mbps (Compared to the 4804Mbps for both Asus).

The Asus side, RT-AX86U PRO is cheaper and it's a newer product with more software function and almost the same hardware with Asus GT-AX6000. Also the coverage is a little bit better than the Asus GT-AX6000, but the Asus GT-AX6000 has 3.2 gen1 USB port and two 2.5G both LAN/WAN.

At this point I'm only able to afford one router.

If I want to add more AP to improve the signal coverage, is there any difference between ASUS AiMesh and Unifi?

Which one would you choose out of these three routers and why?

Please forgive my grammar.

Thanks!

I'm no expert, but there's lots of chatter about the UDR maxing out at about 700mbps throughput if you have all of the security features enabled.
This was my experience with the original UDM, (with IPS/IDS enabled - I get a lot less than the claimed throughput).

Personally I think the main benefit of Unifi kit is when you have ALL your gear managed under the Unify Network app. There's less benefit if you aren't completely in the walled garden, but you have to start somewhere I suppose.

Just got gt6000 a month back replacing orbi ac+ satellite and man I can see hugh difference between speed, coverage and features. Did contemplate between gt & ax86 pro a lot. Finally went with GT due to 2x 2.5g port. I have a 4 bedroom, 2 storey home. Router is centrally located downstairs and getting excellent range all over. I have 1gig fibre and have plex client running in 3 rooms so went with gt as it might be helpful to have extra bandwidth.

Other think to consider is physical shape. Gt is huge and hard to mount on wall. Plus those antenna can't be rotated. Ax86 is standing position and might be good for mounting no idea though.

Other thing was that I might would have needed a node upstairs so having a 2.5g lan port and hardwired backhaul can help with maximum speed. But as of now I don't need a node as this one is fine.

    • I have around 35 or so wifi devices connected at a time and gt hasn't missed a bit. I have around 2000sq ft home and get full coverage so you will be fine with either of the asus. Running couple of vm's, plex, home assistant etc. Plex library is also shared with friends and family so probably network is quite active most of the time.

The Ubiquiti products are more pro-sumer, they aren’t enterprise grade.

Ubiquiti are sort of like the Apple of routers. Lovely hardware, great easy to use software, lots of options that just work. But yeah, less bang for your buck.

Whilst Ubiquiti hardware is quite configurable, my recommendation is not change much more than the basic settings. Because, like Apple, some Unifi features can be quite buggy — with software updates being a particularly perilous experience.

    Therefore;
    * If you rock an Android phone and raw performance is important, go for Asus.
    * If you rock an Apple phone, the nicest experience is important, and you don’t want to tinker much, go with Ubiquiti.

    • Thanks for the suggestion. From where I stand, the CEO of Ubiquiti is a former Apple engineer, which might explain why there are so many similarities

  • Where would you buy the udr?

    Any deals going!

    • I don't quite understand your meaning. But if I were to purchase UDR, I would choose to purchase directly on the website.

  • A roll of cat 6 cable?

  • I am also in the same boat and haven't made a decision. Your comments will help me decide.

Price point not much of a difference
AC86u Pro is selling for $449, and GT-AX6000 for $458.

I couldn't make much difference for the specs except for one more WAN port. Could you please share your thoughts?

  • hey guys

does anyone know if the ASUS GT-AX6000 good enough for 2 story house and several wifi connected CCTV and play FPS games (battlefield 4)?
