Whisky Lovers Rewards Club 1-Year Membership $75 (Regular Price $100) @ The Whisky List

50

This isn't advertised and I couldn't even remember how it happened last night when I was browsing the site.

The Whiksy List is like an aggregator of several independent bottle shops/sites and a few distilleries. I was checking prices for something I wanted and ended up there. They also have their own shop, so when you click on a bottle, there'll be prices from all the other bottlos that have them and show you the best price. I recognised a few smaller sites that have great selections and prices. Shipping is free over $200 to most areas, but the $200 has to be from the same store.

From what I understand, this thing just launched, is like a loyalty program, and the annual fee is normally $100, which gets you:

  • Free shipping with insurance on full bottles purchased from The Whisky List Shop (not the partner shops, that's still $200, but TWL is the best price maybe 80% of the time)
  • Discounted access to member's events, promotions and offers
  • $10 credit for every 500 points
  • $25 credit on your birthday
  • Whisky recommendations from "their team of experts"

This is how the points system works: purchases will earn you 1 point per $1 spent, with the exception of selected whiskies including TWL exclusives which will earn you 2 points per $1 spent (this is what I'm most interested in because I'll pretty much get at least $10 credit for every purchase)

The discount will be applied at checkout

This is probably not worth it for everyone, but I looked at their regular selection, independent bottlings and the exclusive bottles and the prices seem alright. As a comparison I was a member of SMWS for years, but stopped around 2016 because they released the same distilleries nearly every month, and I was like, "how many bottles of Caol Ila and Ardmore do I need?" But I've heard they're a bit better now.

I have no idea how being a Whisky Rewards Club member will be like. This is new; I think I got a pop-up or something and I thought (profanity) it 100 bucks, why not, then I got the 25% off at checkout. To me, the advantages are: more variety of exclusives (compared to SMWS when I was a member), good selection of indy bottlings of Scottish distilleries I like, pretty good selection of bourbon and rye, the aggregated price comparisons, free insured shipping and the fact that this will pay for itself after a few orders. There's also a social element where members can post reviews. I'm not sure if there's any interaction but it could be fun.

I had to type this whole post because I couldn't copy paste most of the info, and had to search for a news article because there's no links or any mention of it on the homepage. You're welcome.

Whisky recommendations from "their team of experts"

i just subscribe to your posts tbh

I'm no Jim Murray, who once gave Crown Royal "whisky of the year" (no offense to any Canadians browsing). I'm just a high-functioning alcoholic that happens to have tried probably over 2k different whisk(e)ys and have a decent memory.

      • Crown Royal Northern Harvest Rye is an amazing whiskey and I've been lucky enough to enjoy a few bottles. It being award whiskey of the year really got to some pretentious scotch drinkers

        • +2

A lot of American bottlers source their rye from Canada so I actually love some Canadian rye. But the CRNHR is incredibly plain; it's fine but it's not great, certainly not "amazing". I don't even care about Jimmy's awards. The guy's a muppet and no one takes him seriously.

I drink all sorts of booze, not only Scotch. I own whiskies from all around the world. I try everything and like the weirdest shit. My go-to bottle is Wild Turkey 101, and 101 Rye before it was discontinued.

@rosebank: I'm thinking about adding a Wild Turkey 101 next. Any other budget recommendations? I've thought about picking up something from "The Singleton" range.

            • +2

@bleemo: I would avoid The Singletons, I've tried a few and thay are not good, maybe some of the others are okay but I think I'll pass.

Scotch is hard because everything has gone up. I'll have a quick look at Dan's and Nick's and get back to you

@bleemo: Sorry, I was too busy buying whisky from The Whisky List. Dan Murphy's site is garbage. you can't even open bottles in new tabs.

So I went to Nicks, and the prices are the same for my recs. Sadly, everything good is now ~$100

Sherry: Glenfarclas 105 1L. it's currently on special for $130, but it's also 1L and 60% ABV, and a quintessential sherry bomb.

Bourbon:Clynelish 14 My absolute favourite affordable ex-bourbon scotch. 46% ABV. I like to pretend it's a baby Brora.

Bonus: Amrut Fusion This is what got me into Indian whisky. The peat level is very low, but ABV is high at 50%. Great whisky, seems a bit simple at first but is actually quite complex, and has a unique subcontinent character. It's hard to describe.

I didn't ask if you wanted peat, but it's basically Ardbeg 10, Caol Ila 12, Port Charlotte 10, Laphroaig Quarter Cask, Kilchoman - ascending order in price. Then there's the non-Islay peated whiskies like Ledaig, Talisker, Admore, Ardnamurchan (Adelphi's new distillery). Benromach and Benriach also do peat. Then there's Campbeltown with Springbank and Longrow. These all have varied levels of peat, some are light and moderate, some can punch you in the face like an Ardbeg or Froggy.

@rosebank: much appreciated. Plenty to work through there!

I bought the Colonel E.H. Taylor Small Batch after your previous recommendation and recently tried it. Very enjoyable for me and it's got a great smell to it!

@rosebank: yeah 101 is a good daily drive. I will have to respectfully disagree on the CRNHR.

            • +1

@Hayesy22: All good, different palates and all that. It was just the first one that came to mind when I thought of JM because I wanted to make fun of him.

Fair point. I'll rephrase. My wallet can't take it anymore 😂 Trying desperately not to buy any bottles for a bit

        • same. My drinks cabinet is so full I'm pushing friends to visit and drink my half empty bottles lmao

  • The Port Charlotte 10 isn't just hype, it's stellar. I highly recommend Ralfy's whisky of 2023
