Kia Dealer Can't Get Stock

Hi OzBargains people.

I am pretty upset with my local Kia dealer. Two weeks ago I put down an order and deposit for a base model Kia Rio, Dealer said it would most likely be a three month wait.

I get a call today any they say cannot get the stock from Kia Australia.

Looking for advice, as I still want the vehicle, is there anything I can do?

Buy another car that isn't a Kia. They can't get the stock because it's been discontinued.

If he put a deposit down, they will fulfill his order. 500 orders to be delivered by mid-year and then that's it. Done.

It won't happen. See second paragraph from OP.

I get a call today any they say cannot get the stock from Kia Australia.

Same thing happened to me with Toyota; ordered a Lunar Blue Corolla sedan but the colour got discontinued and had to change my colour (and pay more money)

Also happened to me with Mitsu. It's very common. The importer/distributor would've placed their final orders well in advance so coming stock is already set in stone.

Buy second hand in stock Rio.

    Kia closed the books

"I'm sorry, I can't sell you something I don't have" — a bad KIA dealer, who deserves scorn and shame

  • +5

Sue them. Push this. Give it all you've got!!!!!!!!!?!!!!!!!???!!!!!

  • Look for a dealer that has stock? I found this. Might not be local to you, but surely something in your state has something. Some people drive hundreds of kilometres just to get a car they want.

Regional car dealers generally have a wider range of stock vs metro.

    • +2

      Says that's not for sale

      • Maybe not that specific one at Berwick, but there should be some elsewhere if you call dealers or look around more online. Just depends where the OP is based.

    • Thanks, but i wanted one in manual. None of the dealers i spoke with have them my only option was to order one.

      • +4

        Get a Picanto GT

        • THIS is what you need to do @cm712.

      • Do they know have a sports shift mode that allows you to manually change it? I thought a lot of Manufacturers were moving away from Manual cars.

I use Sports Shift all the time in my Ford Ranger, same with my Wife's Tucson.

        • Sports shift just isn’t the same if you really want a manual. Although, it’s a reasonable compromise if you spend a lot of time in heavy traffic.

Offer to pay more. Keep offering more until you get what you want.

Get money, take holiday, go to Rio.

    • +4

      Save money. Watch Rio.

      • +2

        Watch Rio

        here…

      • Blame it on Rio

as an aside, when a movie is called 'the worst movie michael caine ever made' then you know its not great

        • +1

Not a lot of people know that.

        • That is a truly dreadful show.

I think Kia recently announced that Rio will be (might have been) discontinued in Australia. get a Cerato or other brand.

I prefer to make my own Stock…

This may have something do with it. If the ICE Rio is going to be discontinued I'd most certainly would not buy one now.

straight to the high court , because it is the vibe of the thing.

but seriously, get your deposit back and buy something else.

  • Family member has been waiting a year for a new Sportage.

Still no ETA according to the dealer.

I wonder if a call to KIA HQ will help.

    • +1

Yeah but in the OP's case, unlike the Sportage, the Rio is discontinued.

      • I meant if a call to KIA HQ will help my family member.

KIA HQ won't help the OP as they are the ones who are discontinuing the car.

        • Bothering Kia HQ definitely will not help. Keep waiting and hope someone cancels their order and it's the same specs. That's how I got my car

          • @kerfuffle: Congrats! What car and how long did you wait?

            • @JimB: Corolla hybrid and nine months (or technically two as I changed my order from petrol to hybrid)

              • @kerfuffle: Hybrid is definitely the way to go.

    • +1

I wonder if a call to KIA HQ will help.

Pretty sure there’d be people at KIA HQ who understand these supply issues and are working hard to get more cars into the country.

  • See if they can get another colour and/or trim level if you're really set on the Rio. It's been discontinued and I'd say Kia Aust have already placed they're final orders. There may be something unallocated amongst that stock that you can still get. Otherwise buy used or choose another car.

  • Not sure if that dealer would have access to other dealerships or what their stock levels are, but I have in the past used a car broker.

They sourced the car from QLD (I'm in VIC) and had it shipped down as at that time, it was the only car with the specs I was after in the Country.

  • +1

I can't for the life of me think why you'd want a discontinued car.
There's minimal demand for it which is why kia's dropped it, let alone the ridiiculous depreciation it'll go through. Just get your deposit back and buy another car.

    Simplez

    • Well I want a cheap eco small car, most manufactures are stopping production of small cars. I would like to get one while I still can.

      • +1

I'd Just go secondhand. Brand new in this price segment you don't really gain much. Or the i30

  • +1

Ring around other dealers and see if they have stock of something resembling what you want. You may have to take a different colour or slightly different specification.

In the Pajero Sport forum I'm on those that want a specific colour/trim level are waiting 4-8 months. Others that are flexible or willing to ring around are getting floor stock in a week or two.

  • +4

Why not go to https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/new/kia/rio/s-badge/victori… and enquire of the Kia Victoria dealers who appear on this list?

I reckon that at least one will have a car available.

  • +3

Short of finding a model with similar specs as what you want on any dealers lot/showroom floor, you’ll need to seek an alternative to it.

Im not sure what you think anyone can do ? build one out of lego?

Buy a decent looking car instead…

When I was told in January it was discontinued, instead went for i30

  • my mate still waiting for his Kia Carnival, put deposit down in 2021 December. That's 14 months ago… still no answer

    • +1

Your mate is getting screwed. I rang around Brisbane dealers in early January, picked up my new Carnival Platinum last week.

      • Thanks for that I will let him know and complain to his dealership

      • Hey my mate asked if you got diesel?

He want Platnium spec in Petrol

  • I placed an order March 2022 for a Kia Sorento hybrid and was told 8 months as only 10 hybrid comes in to Australia per month and picked up my car just before Christmas 🎄 not much communication from dealer but contacted Kia Australia and got more answers there.

    • What answers did you get from Kia Australia?
I also ordered a Sorento hybrid in March 2022. Told 6-8 months. Still nothing.
I rang Kia Australia, nil ETA. My dealer finally got back to me a few weeks ago and said that no Sorento hybrids will be delivered to Aus in 2023.

  • A friend ordered a top of the line Toyota RAV4 Hybrid 14 months ago.

Last week he rang, again, to see if there was any indication of when it would be delivered.

He was told that the dealership had no info on where he was in the delivery queue.

He was told that there is a backlog of 6000 orders in WA and that 80/month were being delivered.

He went to Subaru. He was told that with Toyota you don't get a fixed position in the delivery queue. They jump the queue to give priority to large orders from mining and car rental companies. He was told that with Subaru you get a fixed position in the queue.

He got a quote for a top of the line, non-hybrid white Forester.

We then submitted an RFQ to John Cadoghan's broker who called in about 15 minutes.

The broker called back the following day with the quote which was about $3000 less than the quoted price.

    He ordered one.

Delivery is scheduled for next week!!!

He is keeping his order for the RAV4 and he will on-sell it when he receives it. New second hand RAV4s are selling for $15,000 more than list price.

    • Speaking of on-selling, what is the best way to do this?

I assume you can ask for it to be registered in someone else's name or do you have to take delivery and then sell it? If the latter, could you get it delivered unregistered?

Presumably the first option would give a greater markup than the second one.

    • $3000 on about $50,000 is about 6%.

When I bought my Forester in 2019 the broker price was about 12% less than quoted price.

  • Yes you can wait
