Where to Get Bulk Free Cardboard for Using as Sheet Mulch

I've got lots of long grass that we're trying to plant out. Hoping to get large sheets of cardboard that I can lay over the grass, probably weighed down with chip mulch to kill/suppress it, and prepare it for planting. Also for maintaining already planted areas.

I know bunnings have lots of boxes, but they tend to be smaller. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

  • Ask on local FB groups for packing boxes etc, should get them free

  • Local recycle centers

Try your local bike shop or appliance store. Bike shops usually are keen to get ride of their bike boxes.

    Hn,jB,ow,tgg warehouses etc.

Might cost a couple of 6 packs.

  • Go to Woolworths and ask for free cardboard boxes.

  • Go to a bicycle store.

All the bikes come partially built in quite large and flat boxes.

My experience has been that most will hand over all their boxes to avoid having to take it to the rubbish centre.

  • Ask woolies - they've probably already flattened them for you too.

  • Probably you can try local tips

gumtree… people give away moving boxes all the time.

  • If you have Costco membership or know anyone with Costco membership, you can get lots of free cardboards. Their cardboards are great because they're huge and they use them for lining their products so you get one big piece flat ones.

  • I was speaking to the manager of a recycling center in southern Adelaide. He hates taking cardboard from customers as he has to pay to dispose of it. So maybe try getting cardboard from a bottle/can recycling place. You might be doing them a favour.

  • Buy stuff from Amazon , most come in box's

  • May sound weird but I get cardboard and boxes from the crash repairers round the corner. They usually have large deliveries that come well packaged in huge boxes. Always happy to give them to me !
    Just a thought

Have a think about the chemicals in the glue and plastic from the sticky tape.

I use newspaper; the ink is soy based.

mate if you live in northern melbourne just drop by my workplace and I'll throw in what ever amount you can fit in your car/truck. But seriously just go around some industrial park and ask around. Aldi maybe also a good choice as they have those produce boxes that are very thick carton, maybe only a size of you pillow but much better than Bunning's mediocre box (but beware some produce carton have wax on them). Appliance or furniture stores will give you the large one, fridge are excellent choice.

  • Thanks everyone. I called local council/waste services, they say they cant give it out once they have it. Gonna try some of the suggestions above tomorrow.

And yes. I remove sticky tape / plastic / staples etc. At least as best I can. If some remains, probably better than using ride on lawn mower more than I'd need to otherwise.

It’s a bit of a joke that council won’t give that sort of stuff away and they ‘have to’ send it to waste. Our local wouldn’t give out pallets, they had to go to waste. Apparently it’s to do with both public liability risk of giving away waste and corruption potential with someone making money off council ‘leftovers’. With ‘leftovers’ being anything from waste pallets to someone over-ordering metres of turf to do someone’s backyard.

  • Most new Sydney buildings and houses are made from cardboard so just visit any construction between 7pm and 4am.

  • If you’re in Adelaide I have a whole bunch in my garage currently from recent furniture purchases
