2TB NVMe for a Database

My lightroom catalogue is like a DB: lots of small writes as well as slightly bigger ones to preview images in the 5-20mb range.

So dram nvme SSD is the way to go, right?
Needs to be reliable, too as I guess it'll take a bit of thrashing.

  • What are you using currently? how slow is it? what is your backup strategy?

  • I've swapped between Raid 5 4x8tb and a single sata SSD over the years. I'm getting an nvme drive anyway to use a cache/ swap drive for Photoshop etc, just figured I may as well get one that will perform best with lightroom

  • Lightroom always was dog slow. Doesn’t help that it’s written in an interpreted language. It’s not really a database IMHO, if it was it would be way more efficient. Unfortunately there is nothing quite like it for the functionality it provided, but it sure is moody.

Best thing you can do for performance is to split your library up into smaller libraries and/or cull as many photos as you can. Don’t just keep everything because you can.

Might also we worth having your photos on a different drive to your library. In theory having all those previews on a different drive might allow some parallel reads. But it’s never been practical for me to try this.
