Mobile Plans - Work Allowance

I get a work allowance for $100 pm however the way phones and plans are sold nowadays the only way to get good pricing is outright.
Is anyone in the same boat and can share advice?
Not fussed with brand/model just want to take full advantage of a new phone + plan and not be out of pocket.
Only caveat is i have to be on the Telstra network.

why do you care that "good pricing is outright" if your work is paying for it?

    • Because it is a monthly expense reimbursement that i need to provide an invoice or statement for not an allowance as such. Sorry for not being clear on that.

Get the cheap unlimited call plan and a handset with the shortest monthly payment plan to maximise the $100/month allowance.

That way, the phone is yours after 12 months (regardless of if you stay at the company or not), courtesy of your company!

    • Tell me more?

      • Yes, please do :)

For an iPhone 14, best you can do by this method is $100pm for 24 months :'(
      Cheapest plan is $58pm!

      • You're right - I didn't look at the prices on the Telstra website. I should've actually said something like "maximizing the allowance to own as much as the phone as possible".

  • I've got a friend in the same boat asking for advice. They want the iPhone Pro Max though.. so i was thinking…
$99 JB HiFi plan for 24 months with the $800 goft card. But there is a chnace my friend will go on mat leave within the 24 months - so open to better suggestions/options!

  • I get a work allowance for $100 pm

Do they pay it for you? Or is the $100 paid to you directly?

Could you not say get a $140 p/m solution and then put in $40 of your own?

    • That's what i'm doing currently but in true OzB spirit i want to get out of this without putting in any of my own money!!! ;) If it was $105 i wouldn't be mad but $40 extra is too much RN.

You get $1000 off an iPhone at the Apple store when you sign up to the $69pm voda plan.
edit: nvm you said Telstra. I'll leave this comment for the benefit of others.

    • I personally was thinking of this offer myself so I bought a pre-paid voda sim (like how bad could the reception be right?).. but this last month has been the most pain. I will never go with Vodafone again!

  • JB Hifi Telstra Deal: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/pages/jb-mobile-instore
    $99pm. $1000 gift card. 24 months.
Recently had a deal where it was $89pm and $1100 gift card, could wait and see if that happens again.

    • Two problems with that, I cannot amortise the cost of the phone over the 24 months and $1100 doesn't get you a lot in phones nowadays.

      • But surely $1000 gift card to take off phone staright away and amortise the rest would put you in a better position?
Or buy the phone outright and use the gift card on something else?

    • Thanks! Didn't realise it was up to $1000 gift card now!

  • Telstra Upfront Mobile Plan Basic is $58 per month.
    If you don't mind 24 months plan, iphone 14 128GB is $52.04 per month (Total + plan = $110/month)
If you don't mind 36 months plan, the same phone is $34.69month (Total + plan = $92.69)
The phone outright is $1249 currently at Telstra store.

I still think Jb HiFi telstra deal is better with $1100 gift card (when available). $150 out of pocket vs $240 for the same phone + plan length.

And if you aren't fuss with phone model, you can get Pixel 7/Pro from JB Hifi with little / no out-of-pocket. I think Pro is currently on sale for $1049.
You might also be able to claim gst if you are travelling + tax deduction on top (check with accountants - not sure how things work with device purchased through GCs obtained from work paid plans).

    • But I cannot buy a phone and get 12 or 24 invoices to claim expenses each month unless there's something i'm missing?
EDIT: Sorry i didn't read that well enough. Still based end models of those phones or the Pixel but guess i can't have everything…

      • What he mean is you only claim the mobile plan money back - which is $99/month for JB Hi-Fi.

When you sign up for this plan, you will have $1000 gift card that you can use to buy a phone.

        • Thanks sangit, yeah i got it on the second read lol

          • @killabob: Yeah, that's what i meant.

iphone 14 is probably not what I would refer to as "based end models". Isn't it like one of the latest flagship? Sure it is not the pro, max, ultra or whatever the larger size siblings are.

But given your budget is $100 x 24 mths = 2400 and you want it on a telstra plan, it is unlikely you will get a $2400 phone. Maybe if you stretch it to a 36m plan you might be able to get a higher-end version?
