Kids Thermometer Reccommendations

Hi folks,

Currently have an Omron MC720 thermometer and not the biggest fan. While the readings appear accurate, it is a pain to get it working and it constantly shows issues with the battery (despite fresh battery). As it is a few years old now, debating on whether another forehead thermometer or to get an in ear one?

Does anyone rate the in ear ones for better readings? Do they annoy the children too much? The forehead reader is good to see if they are cooking up a fever while asleep.

Not super keen on armpit or rectal readings, I understand these are the most accurate but it isn't going to work with a sleeping angry baby.

Thank you.

yep but between 5 and 7, 7 comes with Age preset for kids, when kids get older, or using for adult, that starts to become annoying lol

      • If you have any issues with the Braun, just mail it to their Melbourne office and if they can't fix it they'll send you a new one.

        • Lot of the time the issue with the Braun is the battery connectors fail. When this happens, just get some isopropyl and clean the connectors and it’ll start working again

We have a Withings Temporal Thermometer and it works reasonably well with a 2 year old. She is able to do her own readings as we have made it a game for her, and it is easy to use when she is asleep as well. Don't know how accurate it really is, however it gives a good enough reading to know if she needs some panadol etc or we need to keep more attention on her.

  • Armpit readers were never enjoyed by our children, and even so, after it 'beeps' for a reading it's recommended to keep in place for another minute.

We changed to laser thermometer and although the accuracy is in the order of +/- 0.5C, it's suitable enough to give us an idea of how the kids are. Eg. there's not much difference between 38.5C and 39C in that we at that point know our child has a fever.

  • We have this one and are happy with it:

I remember it rated highly on a review website when I was trying to choose which one to get. Some reviewers mention a loose battery compartment cover but we haven't had that issue.

The battery issue with the omron one seems to be due to the battery jiggling a bit loose (particularly if dropped). I’ve found taking the battery out and putting it back in again can fix it. They are reasonably accurate. The braun ones are good and don’t have the battery issue but do have a couple of downsides - need to actually get in ear (which children are sometimes reluctant to let happen), not useful for tiny baby ears and ear tips are consumable and need replacing (minor inconvenience)

  • Dear ozbargain colleagues, reporting back, ended up with the Thermoscan 5 (no 7's in stock nearby and I needed it pronto) - it's amazing. Easy. No faffing. Thanks for informing the decision, so relieved so have a solid thermometer.
