How to Report an Abandoned Car?

A car has been left on one of the streets in our suburb for a few weeks now. Should this be reported to the council or local police?

First search result for that title:-

Who to contact. If it is registered and you're concerned it may be stolen, notify the NSW Police on 131 444. If the vehicle is unregistered, or registered but not able to be legally driven due to damage, and it has been in the same place for 15 days, contact your local council.

    https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/report-an-abandon…

If there's nothing wrong with it and it's parked perfectly legally with no parking restrictions, leave it alone. Could be abroad or ill or something.

Thanks. I am in Victoria. Didn’t know it’s legal to park long term on a fairly busy street.

      • Depends on particular councils and streets. Some have no restrictions at all, some need to be local resident, some have to move it every 28 days beyond next intersection, some etc etc etc. Check with your local council if concerned.

If the car is registered and legally parked you can keep it there forever (sort of).

        • +2

          Not if it becomes unroadworthy😉.

So is it abandoned (specifically is it unregistered) or just been parked there longer than you would like?

      • +2

Let me guess. It's parked in front of your house, isn't it?

      • There was an old landrover parked near me at one stage. The parking was unlimited - so legally parked. But it was there for so long, it had spider webs everywhere, and stuff bunching up around the wheels as water drained by.
But, I checked the registration, and they kept renewing it, so technically not abandoned.

  • In Vic I've just called the local cop station. They eventually send a car around to check it out.

      Waste of their time.

Check yourself, if the rego is current on…

If it is, suck it up. A registered car can park for as long as it likes (providing local signage doesn't prohibit that)

If not, report to council, not police

I live regional. Abandoned cars appear quite often on rarely used roads. I've called the local station on several occasions and they always ask if it has plates or a visible VIN. I help them out with the details and they seem more than grateful for my assistance.

Maybe it's just the angry big city cops that DGAF.

        • Or maybe those same metro police have no time to deal with such petty matters and maybe those same police wished that people could learn to adult and deal with the minutiae without ringing an EMERGENCY service…..

And maybe your local police tolerate their locals (you), who ring them and waste their time with petty matters, but are too polite to tell you.

@oscargamer: Calling a local regional station on their published land line is not considered an EMERGENCY. It's a valid service used all the time by locals.

It's not a waste of time when an abandoned car is a threat to other road users. An ex-paddock basher VT Commodore, that likely has a blown engine or transmission, and dumped on a gravel 100kmh zone regional road is not being petty when it's sitting in the middle of the road in the middle of the night. My adult senses tell me that this is not good and needs to be dealt with.

Regional scenarios are very different to city scenarios.

Thanks for the link. I got a page 404 but managed to find the correct page while I was there.

        Registration status & expiry date:
        Cancelled - 30/11/2021

Will report to council as you have suggested.

  • What is the impact of the vehicle being parked there?

    • +7

      "I dont like it…" - OP, probably.

  • Registered nothing you can do about it, not registered call the local council.

  • How do you even know it has been left there? What if they drive it around when you're not looking?

    • Put chalk on the tyres?

    • He put 3 Apple tags on there just to be safe for tracking.

    few weeks now

What impact is it having on you? Is it parked in a timed zone or directly outside your house? Maybe they've gone on holiday, maybe they are sick and haven't needed to use it, what business of it is yours?

Should this be reported to the council or local police?

It Can be reported via Snap Send Solve to the council who may put a sticker on it if it's been there for months. I doubt they'll do it for a vehicle that has been there for a few weeks.

What impact is it having on you?

Maybe OP is exercising their right as a citizen?

      • +3

Lol, their "right" to report a vehicle that has been there for a couple of weeks? let's be real.

      • You don't mean "commie citizen"?

    • +1

Agreed - if it's not illegally parked or obstructing, then it's not really an issue…

Could easily be a holiday, sickness, or injury preventing them from driving. Would expect broken arm, leg or whatnot to last at least a few weeks or months.

  • +3

if its registered it has every right to be there, maybe they went on holidays for 3 months, sick, or in prison.

  • Contact local council.

If the car is registered and legally 'parked' then no one will touch it. Even if there for weeks on end.

I see you're in VIC, so do a rego check on it, you can then report it to council if it is unregistered and they will do the rest of it for you.

If you think its stolen, then give the police a call and ask. They'll look up the rego and tell you.

But if it isn't stolen or unregistered and legally parked, then there is nothing you can do other than enjoy the view.

    • … other than enjoy the view.

      .

A car has been left on one of the streets in our suburb…

The car may not even be visible from OP's home.

The car may not even be visible from OP's home.

I was reading between the lines it was visible from the OP home as it clearly is distressing them greatly to post about it. But you are right.

Contact local council, if their procedure is the same as for dead animals they'll send a full time employee out to spray bit of fluoro pink paint on it.

    • The paint means that the animal has been checked for young (eg a joey in the pouch). The person who does this more often than not is a volunteer from the local animal rescue organisation. The roadkill should normally be picked up later by a roads cleaning crew as part of their normal rounds.

Hey thanks I've been waiting 30 years for someone to answer than question. :)

Around here though unless it's a road hazard the critter is usually left to rot on the nature strip.

      • there was a dead kangaroo exactly on the border of qld / nsw near the gold coast airport for months once, each state said it was the others

  • I recently reported a car near my place that has been there for months (with no plates) using snap, send, solve (which just emails it to council)…nothing has happened yet. 😔

The two spots behind it, have two cars that both have car covers on them, been there for ages also 🙄

  • Run a rego check on the vehicle through your states online portal. If it is registered, mind your own business. If it is unregistered, ring the local council ranger and log it.

  • I had a car parked in front of my house for 4 months. rang council and they checked it out and said that the car was registered so they couldn't do anything. finally the owner came and moved it.

  • It could be stolen and dumped or been used in a criminal act. I would call the police. They will check it out. Because it has plates on it doesn't mean it's registered.

  • set it on fire, that'll get everyone notified pretty quickly

Surprised nobody has linked Seinfeld or Superwog yet.

  • Sounds like a busybody

  • Get a camera
Livestream the soupkitchens (usually between midnight and 4am)
    Profit.

  • I bought a abandoned car from a council it was legally parked and registered the council street sweeper after a couple months reported it.

    Multiple attempts to contact owner.
It was towed and 9 months later put out to tender.

Car in excellent condition there was no finance on it owner lives 40 minutes away all up cost to me purchase, rwc, new battery rego and insurance $2300 insured for $10,000

Report to police then either council or main roads.
