To be fair, the mods will find any excuse to revise a post that they can.

  • No Chromecast built in…

  • I am running a Yamaha RX-V385 with basic q acoustic 3030i x2, 3090Ci Center Speaker, and Yamaha sub in 3.1. Currently not loving the sound I am getting, could something like
Marantz SR5015 make it worth the upgrade?

    • +1

I'd probably recommend new speakers first. What don't you love about the sound you are getting?

      • just dialogue really, not as clear as I like.

        • The amp does not decide clarity……

Have you used the YPAO setup feature? Might help.

Might also want to increase the volume of the center speaker over the others.

Try putting the Yamaha into direct (pure) stereo. Yes, it will turn off the center and the sub, but listen and see how it sounds. By turning off all processing you might find that it is your speakers you aren't happy with. Or it might even show you that your center isn't up to scratch and you prefer the phantom center from the 2x 3030i.

I wouldn't imagine an AVR upgrade having that much of a benefit unless the speakers aren't getting the power they need.

          • @Morien: Thank you very much for taking the time to help me out, I will try that.

        • Those are good speakers. I would suggest making sure the centre is aimed directly to ear level and bump up the centre volume by 1 or 2 db.

I have q acoustic 3050i and QB12. You can try Adjust speaker angle (toe-in) first. I found that Q Acoustic Speakers' sound stage too wide.

    • Have both and much prefer Marantz over Yamaha.

      Marant is warmer and Yamaha/brighter/harsher.

    Hey Rep,
this receiver supports features like VRR, however it only has one 8k input. Am I right to assume you can only get the hdmi 2.1 gaming features through the one 8k input? The remaining are hdmi 2.0?
    Thanks

    • Yes

    • That's what it looks like, but at least it does 40gbps.

I'm in the market for a new AV Receiver and right now the Denon AVR-S760H is at the top of my list. Can get them for <$1k. I'm in the stage now of finding reasons not to get one.

My current receiver is the Yamaha RX-V681 that was an ozbargain back in 2016! That was my third Yamaha so want to get another one but the specs are terrible for their price and they're still having HDMI 2.1 issues from what I've seen. Also the only Yamaha receivers that can do 40gbps are A6A and up which is out of my budget.

      • @Obake

Running exactly the same Yamaha RX-V681 setup. It doesnt do 4K @ 120hz. It is my fourth consecutive Yamaha and I have to say I have never been disappointed.

Want to replace it, but want the replacement to have multiple 4K @ 120hz ports not just one. I like the A6A too and have been hoping for it to go on a special somewhere like Eastwood Hifi

    • Funny you mention 8k…. I have just been in a conference where specific TV manufacturers have said that 8k is dead and there was 0 presented a recent trade events promoting this. I feel you need to concentrate more on specific products to plug in and the only ones that will support 4k/120 is a PS5 or Xbox.

With this being said I will also advise that of 100% of DVDs being purchased in the last 12 months only 20% where 4k Bluray. That shows that majority now stream content which will never ever deliver 8k

      • I'd say 0% of DVD purchases are Blu-ray in any form. But I'd agree that there will be no further evolution of physical media, and your common streaming services have no appetite to increase bandwidth usage. Higher resolution streaming I can only imagine being of real use where a higher field of view is needed ie 3D surround as used in VR headsets.

        Well 8K/60 = 4K120 = HDMI2.1, no one really cares about 8K per se.

      • +1

If you have an Xbox and ps5 you want at least two or a third to do a little future proofing. Trying to pass through the tv I have found to be a super frustrating experience, frustrating enough for me to upgrade my amp. So yeah people do care, just not about 8k like you said…

        • Yeah I have PS5 + Series X + Nvidia Shield + PC, besides who wants to spend $1000+ on something that is not future proof. AVR should be good for 10 years in my experience.

      • +3

"8K" is how manufactures label their HDMI 2.1 4K/120 port(s).

If you look at the 5015 it also uses 8K labels for in and out.

In Marantz's marketing they refer to the 5015 as a "7.2 CHANNEL 8K AV RECEIVER WITH HEOS".

You even use "8K" multiple times in your post.

PS5 and XBOXSX is not the only device that supports 4K/120. Most modern PC (graphic cards) support 4K/120.

        • -1

Exactly this. I'm not after 8K video (not yet, anyway), but 4K on a receiver doesn't tell me anything useful. 8K tells me it should do 4K/120, VRR, etc.

  • I sold my Marantz PM7000N, been looking for a home theatre amp to use with my B&W 706s2 and REL T9I.

    How does this compare to:
    Denon avr-x2700h - at like $1230
New Sony es HT Receivers? (Sony ES STR-AZ1000ES)

Ill eventually add a center speaker and some surrounds (potentially get floor standing and move my bookshelf speakers to the rear)

    Thanks

    • Last I looked the x1700h is better value over the 2700 and can be had for around $1k.

  • Don't think this supports Dirac Live…what do people think about waiting / paying more for Dirac Live? My home theatre setup is relatively small and off-centre, wonder if it is as good as people say…

    • I have a pretty sub-optimal physical space for my TV/stereo and have run a few different auto-cal systems over time. I had Audyssey XT32 in a massive Denon 4520 and found it to be great. Also had Audyssey XT in a slimline Marantz unit for a while and found it nowhere near as useful, especially when it came to integrating the sub with the rest of the system.

Running an Anthem with ARC Genesis now and it's very nice as well, although I wasn't able to A/B it with the XT32 setup I think it's easily as good.

Dirac certainly gets a good wrap, but aren't Marantz only bringing it to a couple of units that are like 3x this price?

      • aren't Marantz only bringing it to a couple of units that are like 3x this price?

Probably. There are cheaper options from other brands, eg. Onkyo TX-NR7100, Pioneer VSX-LX305. May be a paid addon on top of this though :(

  • I know of two Marantz amps bought in last 10 years that have issues. I certainly wouldn't buy one.

    • 2 models? Or 2 amps?

I have never had any issues with my Denon or Marantz. But that's not a sample size I'd trust.

      • At home we have two identical amps. One, the power button doesn't work properly, other the optical out stopped working. $2k amps shouldn't have those issues.
