Should a Male with Long Hair Be Charged for a "Ladies Cut" Instead of a Mens Cut"?

Been growing my hair for a couple of years now. Have had no hair cuts in that time.

Now that I would like just a trim and a tidy up, I am on the search for hairdressers in my area.

When I come across the price list, it is a big difference between the two so naturally I have been asking these businesses and 90% of the places I have queried have said it will be a ladies cut regardless of even if it is a trim. Some places have removed the ladies/mens and just said it is based off time instead of gender.

Happy to pay for either, but would like your opinions on the matter. I am not after a restyle, legit just a trim.

Yep. Unless it’s a crew cut… then women getting a crew cut should be charged the same as men.

    • I mean in that instance, they would or could just go to a barbers?
Most Barbershops do not have the men vs women prices…unless I am wrong.

    • My father was a military man . Guess I wasn't such a "good soldier". Anyways, when I was 35, he tried to give me a crew cut while I was asleep. I woke up, broke his arm, haven't seen him since.

  • Many haircut shops open in suburban garges charging 15 to 20 dollars .they should be able to mow the hairs.

Hair should always be charged based on time.

Removing an inch off should cost the same, as should a perm, colour etc, regardless of whose head it's on.

Gender signage is a left over simply attempting to make pricing easier. Some have gone to more specifics - short, long, perm etc

I dunno about always. I notice that when I go into a salon, as a man, if they aren't busy then they will usually spend more time on my hair and still charge the standard men's cut. If they are busy they will usually do it fast and still charge the same. If hairdresser's charged based on time and not the overall cut then they would abuse it by deliberately taking a lot time when business is slow, like like taxi drivers do.

      • That's their prerogative. But as a woman with longish hair, I know if I go into Just Cuts, theyll smash out a trim in 20mins for $39. And theyll do the same for the next person etc (pensioners and kids different).

But if i go into a fancy salon, and theyre spending 4-5 hours, I aint paying less than $300.

Obviously there's a measure regarding expertise, reputation etc. But the more time stuffing around should = $$$

If it's based on time… no one's hair is alike and will vary different to ethnic background.
so yes it does matter who's head it is on.

In the current era of gender stuff, anyone can identify as anything….

Really? Waiting for you to throw in woke.

I think OP identifies as a man with long hair.

  • If they can cut your long hair with clippers instead of scissors, then no you should be charged for a men's cut.

  • One place said to me "if I were cutting it short back to a male haircut they would only charge me a mens cut.
But if it is just a trim then they would charge me a ladies….😂

Sounds stupid but there's two different skills involved taking two different time frames.

Back to short - shaver out, buzz and then cut and fashion top.

Trim long - layering and partitioning the hair to ensure it all lines up. It's time consuming and fiddly.

  • Long hair is generally associated with women. So if you have hair like a woman, expect to be charged the women's price.

  • Some places have removed the ladies/men's and just said it is based off time instead of gender.

That would suck because I wouldn't want to be paying $200 (slightly exaggerated female price) for someone to cut my man-hair.

I think the difference in "frequency" of haircuts between men and women may have something to do with the pricing as well. Men generally cut their hair much more frequently than women. I cut my hair every two weeks but with my female friends, the time between haircuts is often counted in months.

      slightly exaggerated female price

      Not exaggerated in some salons…

  • I think the price should be based on the time and difficulty of the cut and not whether someone is a woman or man.

I don't know if it is more difficult to trim long hair compared to short hair, but maybe it is?

  • +1 prices should be charged based on time block

It's up to the salon to set their prices. Most salons that predominately cater for female clients will charge you the female price if you get a cut that is considered to be a female style. Cutting and styling long hair is considered to be a female style. As OP said you will be charged a men's style cut if you get a short hairstyle. But a few salons charge you simply based on your gender. It is considered harder to cut a ladies style. Men often get the least experience hairdresser, because their short hair is considered easier. If they charged just on time then men should pay the most, because an inexperienced hairdresser will take longer. So if you're getting a female cut with an experienced hairdresser then you will pay. There are many factors that affect the cost of services, not just time - experience is a big one, and every business has to pay for overheads (pardon the pun).

  • Should be charged by the inch >………………….<
