Can You Negotiate Freebies at JB Hi-Fi

Jb Hi-Fi has a discount on MacBooks at the moment, and it works out to be less than the education store price but I'm wondering if it's possible to squeeze any freebies or discounts out of them if I implied that I'm willing to purchase if they throw something in.

Been a while since I shopped at JB so not familiar with negotiation tactics on sale items.

My parents used to do this all the time. You need to be completely shameless for it to work. They've acquired some shame in their older age so they just pay retail now. You don't come right out and ask, you talk first. You chat. The salesperson knows exactly what everything is worth to the store, they already know what they are willing to give up for a sale. You work them over a little to make them not care.

One trick is to tell 'em stories that don't go anywhere, like the time I caught the ferry over to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for my shoe, so, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Give me five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now, where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones..

No shame? How about salesman upselling monster hdmi or protection

No shame as in the buyer.

The salesperson is already working in retail, you gotta leave pride at the door when you clock on or you will go insane (been there done that)

  • They know they probably have the lowest price on Macs now. These are slim margins to begin with, and it's a product that has no problem selling year-round. But sure, you have all the leverage to squeeze out a free laptop sleeve or something /s

Can You negotiate Freebies at JB Hifi

    Not on Apple hardware.

Nothing included in the deal is 'free'.
The salesperson is just offsetting any margin on one object to cover the cost basis of the other.

On a MacBook, with minimal margin already, currently on sale below edu prices. Give it a shot, offer a price for whatever items you want and see if they say no.

  • Maybe you’ll get like a case, or keyboard cover, or something cheap like that

  • I do it all the time, just ask, the worst they can say is no. I negotiated on an iPad case there.

  • Freebies no, but if you're pleasant and ask they will often add some discount on accessories since the margins will be better vs on Apple products and they should have easier room to wriggle

Might be able to get a discount on the protection plan (I did).

    • Aim to get 20 to 40% off. Any less and start walking. They have targets to complete (both the store and sales staff).

When I bought an iphone 4, the guy threw in some extras and even gave a good discount on something my brother was buying. I think he had had a slow day or something.
That was many moons ago now.

  • When you ask them they'll do this:

  • Probs not. I tried. Work was paying for the phone but I wanted a case too, and didn’t want it to come out of my pocket (it’s to protect the work owned phone so fair enough). It was just a flat no. Wouldn’t do anything. I didn’t even ask for a deal on the phone or anything, just asked if they could chuck in a case.

  • personally, I used to negotiate with almost every store I've bought my things especially those expensive ones (ie from 1k and over) from includes JB, HarveyNorman, JoyceMaine, etc. the trick is to get them start the negotiation, it is a bit tricky but there is a fair chance that it works if you talk to the right person. you can't do that to every salesperson but some like to help you out to increase their sale.

there are situations that you can negotiate the price like
    1. pick a quiet day to visit a (quiet) store
    2. look at the face of the salesperson, you get some guts telling you that he/she is approachable, thus negotiable; otherwise, just leave the store and come back again or visit another one. I normally avoid senior and older salesperson. the next point tells you if the one you are talking with is the right one.
    3. don't start negotiating on an item price, instead ask them for ie. an alternate option, especially the one that they don't have then they will be very likely to initiate an offer
    4. sometimes, changing color or material/fabric of your choice gives you a huge discount. I bought a couch from HN, its retails price is about 9k but when it is one sale, it was down to like 6.5k and I was shown a leather one. I asked the salesperson if they have other color/fabric options, he took me straight to the one with a different fabric which I actually prefer to have it than the leather one. He told me that they are of the same price but he could offer me the set at roughly 4k or so due to their high stock and I eventually paid 3.5k as I told him I don't quite like it lol. I didn't actually negotiate with him but he keeps making his offer to me so I took the bait.

it works for me all the time and it works on even the already discounted or on sale items. I don't need to be shameless by doing that :D

    • You're comparing Apple products vs furniture from Hardly Normal and Joyce Mayne lol. About as relevant as people giving 'ask for 20% off and free mats or walk' car advice in 2023.

The incentive to discount is completely different for a furniture retailer. They're large, bulky items that are expensive to move and warehouse and thus burning a hole in the retailer's pocket. They're also subject to seasonal trends, and the margin is fatter. It's why Fantastic and Freedom are literally always having some sale or other.

Margins for Apple is slim af for 3rd party retailers, they're evergreen products that sell year-round, and logistics fees are negligible vs the high value of these goods. You try your pickup artist sales psychology trick to get a fat discount at JB and you'll get laughed out of the store.

      • how did you know that I've never done it successfully with Apple products at JB? :)

  • Don’t ask don’t get.
